Grammar: According to the Virginia Standards of Learning, ninth graders “will edit writing for correct grammar, capitalization, punctuation, spelling, sentence structure, and paragraphing.”  This year, students will review parts of speech and capitalization rules.  Students will gain an understanding of:  parallel structure, appositives, and types of sentences.  Students will use commas and semicolons to distinguish and divide main and subordinate clauses.

Oral Language:  Students will develop presentation skills and participate in oral readings of plays, short stories, novels, or poetry.

Vocabulary and Spelling: Words studied will usually be pulled from literature study.  Frequent vocabulary homework, quizzes, and projects will be assigned to assure that new words are being acquired.
