Music at Catoctin

What we do:

   Our music program is available to students in grades 1-5 and offers opportunities for participation in a variety of meaningful musical experiences throughout the year.

   We promote a singing-centered program that is designed to actively involve students of all learning modalities through:

  • singing, playing instruments,
  • moving to music,
  • creating music,
  • learning to read and write music,
  • listening to and analyzing/evaluating music.

   Our program follows the Loudoun County Elementary Music Curriculum which is aligned with the National Standards of Arts Education, and offers students ample opportunities for SUCCESS!

Why we do it:

   Music and the arts provide a powerful means of engaging students in learning and improving their achievement.  It will help them:

  • think critically and help with problem solving and decision making;
  • learn to work cooperatively within groups;
  • use their imagination and be creative;
  • freely express themselves; learn to develop self-discipline; and
  • appreciate, understand and be aware of different cultures and their values.

When we do it:

   These activities take place within the time frame of 30 minute classes twice a week as developed from a curriculum that consists of a well-planned sequence of developmentally appropriate experiences leading to clearly defined skills and knowledge.

Where we do it:

   All classes are held in the music room (K-4) which is located in Pod 3.

Other Opportunities:

    Sing-a-long:  There will be opportunities for the student body to gather collectively and participate in musical gatherings.

   Catoctin Chorus:  Catoctin's chorus has established a fine reputation as an excellent performing ensemble and will soon be organizing for the school year.  Rehearsals are held during the school day whereby all interested students  have the opportunity  to participate.  Planned performances  will occur at school related functions and within the larger Leesburg community upon request.
