Welcome to May!
(Updated: Monday, May 13th, 2013)

Welcome to Spring! We are getting ready to begin SOL testing this week.  We have our Reading SOL this Thursday the 16th @ 8:15 a.m.  Please make sure that your child is well rested and has had a great breakfast that morning.  We have our Math SOL test next Wednesday the 22nd, and our Science SOL next Friday the 24th.

We are continuing to use multiple sources for our review for our tests.  Our last SOL review club is tomorrow.  We are utilizing Jefferson Lab, SOL Pass, Brain Pop, and Study Island.  I believe that your children can access all of these sites from home.  These are all great review resources.

Please also note that we now have Folders coming home on a daily basis.  This is a way to keep the lines of communication open and also a way for your child to correct any papers that he/she needs to correct in a timely manner.  Along with the Daily Folders please also note that Clarity is being updated on a regular basis, so please make sure that you're checking that as well.  If you don't have a log in yet, then please send in a note and Mr. Michener will get a log in for you.

In Math we're now working in three math groups as well as working on Hands-on-Equations.  We're also working on Math review for our upcoming SOL tests.  I'm so excited to be working in this format.  I'm not sure if I mentioned this or not, but when you look at Clarity, especially in math you will notice a lot of "x's."  Please remember that your child is part of only one math group and not responsible for any work in any other math group.  Your child knows which group they are part of, so you can ask them.  What you want to look for are "z's."  Those mean that your child hasn't turned in an assignment.

In Language Arts we're working R2S, R2S1, and WOW.  Ask your child what each of these means.  We've been writing every day.  As a class we're now reading the second book by Mildred Taylor, "Let the Circle be Unbroken."  Our "Thursday Book" for Futura Day is now: "Brian's Winter." We just finished "The River" and are working on our creative ways to show our understanding of this book. We're also reading books that have to do with our topics in Science and Social Studies.  We are also working on review for our SOL tests.

In Spelling we have a couple of new groups.  Your child has their new contract and all reference sheets are loaded onto our reference page.  We are working on Unit 13.  All of the lists are also loaded onto Spelling City as well.

In Social Studies we're off and running into our regions.  We are currently working on the South West, which only has 4 states in it.  I'm looking at a possible states and capitals quiz sometime next week.

In Science we are now working on Matter and Chemistry.  We're also working on review for our SOL tests.

Keep an eye out for the reference page tab as that's where I place all kinds of documents that you or your child might need.

As always continue encouraging your child to read every night for at least 20 minutes.  We have a book challenge from the library.  We're keeping track of how many books we read each month.

We had a wonderful trip to see "James and the Giant Peach" last week at Imagination Stage.  It was topped off by lunch catered by the Parks!  Thank you so much!  This week will be watching James and the Giant Peach on DVD, then we'll be doing a triple comparison between the book, the play, and the movie.
