Our Program in Loudoun County Public School
The goals of ELL instruction specify that students will demonstrate the ability to understand, speak, read, and write English in order to function in American society. Through ELL instruction, students develop English language proficiency for social and academic purposes.
ELL in Loudoun County is a multi-faceted, structured English language immersion program. Our program offers ESL classes and content area instruction to all enrolled Limited English Proficient (LEP) students. All ELL teachers are specially trained and licensed to teach ELL.
ELL services are offered to all eligible students in kindergarten through grade 12. Students receive assistance either at their home school or at the closest school with available ELL services. ELL students spend the majority of their day in the appropriate grade level classroom. Interaction with peers provides language minority children with models for language and social development.
Teachers use a variety of specialized, age appropriate, high interest materials to facilitate student learning. This combination of specialized language instruction and interactions with English dominant speakers is consistent with research in how a second language is best learned. The academic and linguistic needs of ELL students differ widely, and the ELL program is designed to meet the needs of all second language learners.
