Mentor Requirements and Responsibilities:

  • Completion of electronic application (2011-2012 applications will be accepted May 3-July 30)
  • Recommendation of current administrator
  • On a continuing contract
  • Participation in four hours of professional development
    • Applicants who have never attended LCPS mentor training must attend a 4-hour training session.  Sessions may be accessed on My Learning Plan begining May 10.
    • Applicants who are experienced mentors, but have not recently participated in the mentor program, may choose a 2-hour refresher session. Attendance at a refresher session fulfills half of the professional development requirement and is recommended for applicants who have not participated for two or more years in the LCPS program.  Refresher workshops may be found on My Learning Plan beginning May 10.
    •  Experienced mentors who have recently participated in the mentor program will not attend any sessions in the summer. They will design an individualized professional development plan that supports their role as mentor.  

 

  • Participation in first meeting with protégés the afternoon of the following dates: 
    • Secondary-August 15, 12:30-3:30
    • Elementary-August 16, 12:30-3:30

 

  • Meet with  protégé(s) a MINIMUM of one hour each month outside of contract time;
  • Electronically document time with protégés August-June;
  • Alert appropriate administrator to concerns and issues;
  • Fulfill professional development requirements.

 

MENTORS MUST HAVE THE ABILITY TO

  • communicate with adults
  • recognize and respond to needs of new hires as needed

MENTORS MUST HAVE KNOWLEDGE OF

  • grade/subject content and SOL's
  • instructional skills and strategies
  • School Board mission and goals
  • classroom management skills
  • school-based initiatives

-Mentors will receive an annual stipend of $800 for one protégé, half at the end of the first semester and half at the end of the year. Assignment of each additional protégé is an additional $100 ($50 first semester and $50 at the end of the year).

-Mentors will receive one recertification point per clock hour under option 6.
-Mentors are eligible to receive a total of 90 recertification points per licensure cycle. One point per clock hour will be awarded each year for documented mentoring service as outlined under option 6.
 
-APPLICANTS WHO ARE CHOSEN TO MENTOR WILL BE CONTACTED BY THEIR SCHOOL'S LEAD MENTOR BEFORE THE OPENING OF THE SCHOOL YEAR.
-APPLICANTS MUST ATTEND THE SELECTED SUMMER TRAINING SESSION IN ORDER TO BE CONSIDERED IN THE "POOL" OF ELIGIBLE MENTORS. FAILURE TO ATTEND THE WORKSHOP SELECTED ON MY LEARNING PLAN  WILL REMOVE AN APPLICANT FROM THE LIST.
