June 2013

Dear Parents:

Summer is here!  We are sure your child’s head is filled with visions of trips to the pool and freedom from school!  Although summer vacation activities are important, we urge you to make sure that your child also continues to read regularly throughout the break.

In order to encourage reading we are promoting Newton-Lee’s seventh annual “FLIP Over Books, FLOP Down and Read” summer reading program.  This year we are again challenging the students of Newton-Lee to read 1000 pages!  Students are welcome to read books of their choice, however, students in grades 3 - 5 should be reading at least one book a week!  Parents are encouraged to read to their children, as well. Students should also complete a log to record the titles of the books they read and total the number of pages.  During open house in August and the first two days of school,  students can turn in their reading logs to their teachers. A FLIP-FLOP party will take place the first Friday of school.  Students who successfully complete the challenge will be invited to wear their favorite flip-flops and join us for

Beach Ball-Volleyball Summer Reading BASH!

Popsicle treats will be given out. (Due to half day kindergarten, the summer reading party in September is for students in grades 1-5 only…although we encourage all NLES students to read!)

No records will be accepted after the second day of school.

PARENTS, reading aloud to your child is just as important as children reading independently.  We encourage you to include read-aloud books on your child’s record, as well as books read for the Ashburn Public Library Summer Reading Program.  Above all, the most important thing is to keep our children reading!

Please feel free to contact us at any time with your questions or concerns.
