May Brings…

With the arrival of spring, we look forward to deep green grass, beautiful flowers, bright sunshine, and blue skies!  As Robin Williams once said, “Spring is nature’s way of saying, “Let’s Party!”  But Wait!  Before we begin the party at BST, the Standards of Learning tests must take place.

For Belmont Station Elementary, May brings SOL testing.  Our third, fourth, and fifth graders will be among their peers throughout the state involved in this testing process from May 3rd through May 30th.

Our teachers have focused instruction on the standards outlined by the state and our students are well prepared for these assessments.   Additionally, many technology based programs have been used to prepare the children for tests across the curriculum.  We have also used SOL Pass, ePATS, Study Island, Reflex, Brain Pop and a number of great computerized games and visuals to help our students learn and retain information.

Belmont Station has continuously provided teachers with staff development and benchmarking opportunities to assess the effectiveness of our instructional program.  We have taken advantage of every possibility to improve our many programs, and hopefully, as a result, retain our excellent test scores.

Please check the Belmont Station website for the testing schedule, as well as all upcoming events as not to miss out on any of the special days ahead.  Thank you in advance for assuring that your child is present, well rested, and has a very nutritious breakfast on testing days.

We generally think of the word "end" as a conclusion.  However, keep in mind, it comes from the Greek word anti, which means "before." While we might be concluding the school year, we are really setting students, up for what comes next.

Along with SOL testing, May promises to be a busy month with our first grade Patriotic Program, several field trips, DARE graduation, field days, and the ever so popular, Grandparents’ Day.

As the school year makes its final lap, let’s encourage our children to take the opportunity to finish strong.  Inspire your child to reflect on these two questions:  What are three things I can do to help finish the school year strong academically and socially?  What is one thing I can do to help my classmates finish the year strong academically and socially?

BeST,
Lori
