The United States Military Academy hosts the Summer Leaders Seminar (SLS) for high school juniors going into their senior year. The weeklong program of academic classes, military training, physical fitness training and intramural athletics gives students the opportunity to experience cadet life and to see first-hand what West Point has to offer.
Each year 1,000 highly talented high school juniors are invited to attend the SLS, which is led and supervised by West Point cadets entering their final or "Firstie" year.
After completing the SLS application, you are also opening an admissions file at the Academy. The application window for the 2010 Summer Leaders Seminar is mid-December 2009 through April 1, 2010.

Virginia Aerospace Science and Technology Scholars Summer Program
Iwould like to share with you a great opportunity for your high school juniors. The Virginia Aerospace Science and Technology Scholars (VASTS) is a NASA-based program for students who are interested in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) areas.
VASTS is an interactive distance learning experience for high school juniors, culminating in a one-week residential Summer Academy at NASA Langley Research Center in Hampton. Offered at no cost to the student, VASTS consists of ten lessons from December 2009 through May 2010 under the guidance of master educators. Based on success in the online coursework, students may be selected to attend a Summer Academy where they interact with NASA scientists, engineers and technologists to design a human mission to Mars. Students who successfully participate in VASTS earn 2 college credits for the online course and 2 additional credits for the Summer Academy.

The program is a partnership between the Virginia Space Grant Consortium and NASA Langley Research Center, with the assistance from the Virginia Department of Education and industry partners.

Aviation & Aerospace Camp:
Do you know of any young person between the ages of 14-18 who may be interested in pursuing a career in aviation or aerospace? If so, OBAP the Organization of Black Airline Pilots is sponsoring a camp from June 29th - July 3rd 2009 at Northern Virginia Community College (NOVA) in Manassas Virginia . The camp is open to all.
The purpose of the camp is to introduce interested youth to the world of aviation by giving them "up close" exposure to the many challenging careers and opportunities the aviation industry has to offer. Participation in such a program will look extremely impressive on college admissions applications! Admission is selective and limited to only those students who have a sincere interest.

Applications are now available for the 2009 Oliver Hill/Samuel Tucker Pre-Law Institute, sponsored by the Virginia State Bar Young Lawyers Conference and the Millennium Diversity Initiative.
The Institute is a week long intensive program for rising 10th, 11th and 12th graders. Students will reside at the University of Richmond for a week and be exposed to various members of the bar. They will be taught the basics of trial advocacy and will conduct their own mock trials at the end of the week.

Alpha Phi Alpha's Leadership Development Institute (6/18/2009 -6/21/2009) for young males
This year's Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity's Leadership Development Institute (LDI) - South. LDI is an intense four day leadership program to prepare African American male high school students for success and to foster development of their individual leadership skills. The "southern" program will be held at the University of Maryland , Baltimore County , Maryland , from June 18 - 21, 2009 . The region's northern program will be held at St. John's University , Queens , New York , from July 23 - 26, 2009 . The student participants of LDI are known as Alpha Ambassadors, as they serve as representatives of their homes, communities, and schools. Below are the20criteria for Alpha Ambassadors: * Male * Rising 10th, 11th, or 12th grade student * 2.5 GPA or above * Actively involved in their community * With committed interest to participate in their own development * possessing highly moral and ethical character * have respect for self and others * Willingness to challenge their own social, interpersonal, and creative skills There is a cost for participation, which is $300 ($350 after May 1st deadline) per Alpha Ambassador. This fee includes room and board on the University of Maryland Baltimore County campus, a program book workshop materials, tours, recreation and all LDI 2009 workshops and activities. This cost does not include transportation to Baltimore , Maryland . Registration will close after the first 60 Alpha Ambassadors are processed. The Virginia State Parks Youth Conservation Corps
A summer experience for youth aged 14-17. Under the guidance of adult leaders serving as mentors, role models, technical trainers and supervisiors, crews form ten to twelve members carry out a wide variety of conservation activities at our beautiful Virginia State Parks.
Projects include restoration and preservation of wetlands, stream banks, and other wildlife habitat, including that of threatened and endangered species; Water quality testing, removal of non-native invasive plants and weeds, landscaping, mapping, surveying, recycling and other community improvements.
