One of our fifth grade classes was given an assignment to write a free verse about themselves structured around the theme, "I used to... but now I". This amazing poem came from that assignment. Thank you Olivia for agreeing to share your poem with the world, and thank you for being part of Ashburn Elementary School.  We are so proud of you!

The Disability of Mine

I used to think I was weird,
But now I know I'm different.
I used to have trouble talking,
But now I've found my voice.
I used to lose my temper,
But now I remain calm.
I used to stress out very much,
But now I mostly keep my stress inside.
I used to have a hard life,
But now, here I am, controlling my disability.

~ Olivia, 2013

Positive Behavior Interventions and Support (PBIS)

PBS

Ashburn is a climate for success with Positive Behavior Interventions and Support. PBIS is an approach for teaching children appropriate behavior and providing the supports necessary to sustain that behavior. The goal of PBIS, is to reduce challenging student behavior through a proactive, positive, and consistent manner across all school settings and improving academic achievement and social competence. The key component of PBIS is to teach children to respect themselves, others and property by setting the same expectations and using the same terminology across all school settings.
