Counseling Groups at River Bend
Throughout the school year counselors may have the opportunity to run small counseling groups. The topics of these groups will vary based on the needs of each grade level. Groups that have been offered in the past include anger management, improving social skills/how to be a good friend, and dealing with a family member who uses alcohol and/or drugs. Small group counseling is a great way for students to support one another and to share solutions to common issues. Small groups are usually 6-10 members. They meet once a week for a minimum of 6 weeks. All counselors will be assessing the needs of their grade level during the first few weeks of school to determine what groups would be beneficial. Parent permission is required for students to participate in group counseling.
 

Substance Abuse Education, Prevention and Early Intervention

This program is designed to educate students about the negative consequences of substance abuse and offer counseling services to students experiencing difficulty with substance abuse issues. 
 

Classroom Guidance

Periodically counselors have the pleasure of visiting resource and leading a discussion or teaching a lesson on a certain topic. These topics vary depending on the needs of the grade level. In Loudoun County there are topics that will be presented in each grade level. In 6th grade our students address bullying, 7th graders explore the many different types of harassment, and 8th grade is devoted to academic planning & cyberbullying.
 

Parent/Teacher Conferences

If you wish to set up a conference with your child's team of teachers, please contact your child's counselor to schedule it.  If you would like to meet with just one of your child's teachers, feel free to contact that teacher directly.  Please do not hesitate to call or email with any questions or concerns.
 

Peer Ambassador Program

The Peer Ambassador Program is designed for students here at River Bend Middle School to serve as role models to other students as they demonstrate good school citizenship. The Ambassadors can be seen at the annual Open House for new students and at Back to School Night, as they play on important role in assisting new students find their classes and open lockers. Our Ambassadors will continue their service throughout the year, and welcome new students and give them tours of the building. They will be paired with new students to assist throughout the day to help with the transition to River Bend Middle School. The Ambassadors will work with the Deans and Counselors to enhance our Character Education Program.

  

Safe School Ambassador Program

The Safe School Ambassadors program (SSA) is built on an "inside-out" approach to changing school climate, one that relies on the power of students to help stop bullying and violence.  Ambassadors are socially influential students who are trained to talk with other student to prevent and stop acts of cruelty.  Ambassadors help their friends make better choices about how to treat others, and help them avoid trouble.  These students are equipped with powerful, non-violent communication and intervention skills so they can speak up and take effective actions when they see friends or classmates mistreat each other.  Adult support is provided by school personnel who facilitate ongoing small group meetings (Family groups) that provide Ambassadors with supervision, skill development and support.
