Frank Bogden, an instructional facilitator, technology (IFT) at Buffalo Trail Elementary School, was named the Discovery Education Educator of the Year.

Michelle Watson, a first-grade teacher at Buffalo Trail Elementary, nominated Bogden. In her nomination, Watson stated that Bogden “uses a variety of materials, technology, and resources to promote the development of critical thinking, problem-solving, and performance skills in all students…The innovative initiatives Mr. Bogden has spearheaded provide real-world connections, foster curiosity, and recognize the uniqueness of each student.”

Bogden was more humble in his explanation of his role, saying “I help teachers integrate technology into their lessons. They come up with ideas, and I help them make it happen.”

Bogden described a few projects he has worked on recently, including 3-D printing bubble wands designed by 2nd-grade students as part of a class project and helping students experiment with and learn about green screen technology as part of a digital storytelling lesson.

Bogden explained that once students are exposed to technology, a window opens and they are eager to learn more. “Most of my role is taking ideas and developing them to give the kids experiences. What I like most about my position is that I can see kids make connections and further their learning.”

Bogden said the award was unexpected but greatly appreciated. “There are so many great teachers out there. I feel very honored to be recognized. Receiving this award was very special.”

This is Bogden’s sixth year at Buffalo Trail Elementary and his second as IFT. He describes himself as a career educator who has served for 28 years in different capacities and in other schools and divisions.

The Discovery Education Awards, offered for the first time this year, honor districts, schools, and educators who accelerate student achievement by tapping into their natural curiosity and desire to learn. Bogden is one of five educators nationwide to receive this recognition. Read more about the Discovery Education Awards.
