Dear LCPS Families and Community,
As national immigration policies evolve, I want to reaffirm our unwavering commitment to every student in our schools. Education is not just a service—it is the foundation of a strong community.
We follow the law. The 1982 Supreme Court ruling in Plyler v. Doe guarantees all children, regardless of immigration status, access to public education. This decision, rooted in the 14th Amendment’s Equal Protection Clause, underscores the vital role of public schools in shaping the future. Additionally, the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) protects the privacy of student information, and prohibits LCPS from releasing students’ education records, except in very limited circumstances prescribed by law.
We recognize that changing policies may create uncertainty. Let me be clear: Every child in LCPS belongs. Every family is valued. We are committed to maintaining a safe, welcoming, and inclusive environment where students can focus on learning without fear. We have clear procedures in place to uphold student and staff rights under the law, and our principals are fully informed and prepared to respond should law enforcement officials visit a school.
LCPS is a place of trust and belonging. No child should feel unsafe at school, and no family should fear sending their child to learn. Our responsibility is to educate and support every student to the fullest extent possible and we take that seriously. At the core of LCPS is a belief in the dignity and worth of every person. We are stronger together, and we will continue to stand beside every student and family, ensuring all children receive the education and support they deserve. With appreciation,
