Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS)

The Academies Way

Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports, (PBIS) is a framework for creating safe, positive, equitable schools, where every student can feel valued, connected to the school community, and supported by caring adults. By implementing evidence-based practices within a PBIS framework, schools support their students’ academic, social, emotional, and behavioral success, engage with families to create locally meaningful and culturally relevant outcomes, and use data to make informed decisions that improve the way things work for everyone.

Academies of Loudoun Elements of PBIS

Core Values and Expectations

  • The Academies Way: Respect, Integrity, and Community are the fundamental expectations that the Academies of Loudoun school community has established as the values essential for a safe and productive learning environment.

Behavior Matrix

  • ACL Behavior Matrix – this chart specifies expected behaviors for different settings within the school. It outlines what behaviors align with the core values in each setting.

Teaching Expectations

  • To ensure that all students understand these expectations, we actively teach the expectations to all students (Transition week, Advisory lessons, visual aids, role-modeling),

  • We utilize a Raptor Rave sticker process that positively reinforces students for demonstrating our core values of respect, integrity, and community.

Monitoring and Feedback

  • Teachers and staff provide regular feedback to students, both in terms of acknowledgment and reinforcement for positive behaviors and reminders and redirection for inappropriate behaviors.

  • Data is collected to identify trends and areas that may require additional support or intervention.

Academies of Loudoun Pyramid of Supports

PBIS incorporates a tiered system to address the needs of all students. This System includes 3 Tiers:

  • Tier 1: Universal supports for all students

  • Tier 2: Targeted supports for students who may need additional help meeting expectations

  • Tier 3: Intensive supports
