The College & Career Center provides a wide variety of services to our Independence HS students and their families.  I am here to support everything from college planning and the application process, job opportunities, volunteer services, financial aid and scholarships, Military resume workshops, Gap Year, career exploration and more!  Our beautiful glass room is connected to our counseling department ~ just past the main offices.  It's big, airy, and ready for the students to join me as we offer guidance for high school and beyond.  I look forward to working with you!

School counselors support students' college and career readiness by:

  • Collaborating with stakeholders to create a school culture that promotes readiness for life after high school.

  • Providing individual college and career advising to help students understand the pathways after high school graduation, develop goals, and make informed decisions.

  • Providing opportunities for students to explore career pathways that align with their interests, abilities, strengths, and goals.

  • Engaging students in college exploration and research so that they may identify colleges that will be a good fit and provide an environment to thrive as a student and person.

  • Assisting students in developing a portfolio to highlight their experiences, strengths, and passions.

  • Connecting students to financial aid and scholarship opportunities.

  • Facilitating connections to military recruiters, ROTC programs, and/or military academies for students interested in pursuing military service.

  • Assisting students with applications for jobs, enrichment programs, and colleges, including assistance with resumes, essays, and interviews.

  • Helping students navigate challenges and barriers to promote resilience and perseverance.

Workforce projections call for graduating secondary students to have at least some postsecondary education to fulfill the demands of work (Carnevale, Smith, & Strohl, 2010). School counselors recognize that each student, regardless of background, possesses unique interests, abilities and goals, which will lead to future opportunities. Collaborating with students, families, educational staff and the community, the school counselor works to ensure all students select a postsecondary path to productive citizenry (e.g. military, career technical certificate or two-/four-year degree program) appropriate for the student.
