Integrated Reading & Writing Component- Spring 2024
Beginning in spring 2024, the Grade 5, Grade 8, and End-of-Course (EOC) Reading Standards of Learning (SOL) tests now have 2 parts to the test: a new, integrated Reading and Writing (IRW) component and the traditional multiple-choice component. Students are required to complete both test components, which must be taken over two different school days and in two different test windows:
IRW test window: April 15-May 10, 2024
Multiple-choice test window: May 6-31, 2024
Schools will select specific test administration dates within each test window and communicate administration information to parents.
New, IRW Test format:
Students will be presented with one nonfiction passage (or possibly a pair of passages at grade 8 and EOC) based on history or science content and then answer 5-6 multiple-choice/technology-enhanced items. This component is not computer adaptive.
Students will also receive a writing prompt. The nonfiction passage provides context for students to use when responding to the prompt, or it may serve as a springboard for students who choose to incorporate personal experiences in their responses.
Students compose their response in the online test (TestNav).
The online test must be completed in one day.
Score Reports:
The IRW component score report will provide:
the standards on which the student was assessed and whether their response was correctrubric scores for the writing portion that address:
Composing and Written Expression
Usage and Mechanics
the student’s short-paper response.
The Reading SOL multiple-choice component report will provide:
the standards on which the student was assessed and whether their response was correct(Sample is for Math, but the format of the report is the same for Reading).
