NAEP, often referred to as the Nation's Report Card, is a common measure of student achievement, administered nationally, that reflects what America's students know and can do in various subject areas. NAEP data can also contribute to systemic discussions on educational reform.

In Virginia, public schools are randomly selected for NAEP assessment participation in a variety of assessment administrations. Additionally, based on the assessment being administered, small groups of students from each school are randomly chosen for participation. It is because of these random selections that student, school, and district level NAEP data is not provided.

NAEP assessment administration methodology is in stark contrast to state assessments, such as the Standards of Learning (SOL) administration, which is administered at all public schools in the state and, generally, to all students.
