VKRP (Virginia Kindergarten Readiness Program)
The VKRP (Virginia Kindergarten Readiness Program) is a state-selected assessment system, consisting of three assessments, designed to build a more comprehensive picture of a child's school readiness. The VKRP measures children's early mathematics skills, as well as children's self-regulation and social skills, to complement Virginia's assessments of language and literacy skills through the Virginia Language and Literacy Screening System (VALLSS). LCPS Kindergarten and Pre-Kindergarten students are assessed in the fall and spring.
The VKRP provides valuable information in the following key areas:
Mathematics - measured using the EMAS (Early Mathematics Assesment System)
Self Regulation and Social Skills - measured by the CBRS (Child Behavior Rating Scale)
Language and Literacy - measured by the VALLS-K and VALLS-PK (Virginia Language and Literacy Screener)
EMAS (Early Mathematics Assessment System)
The EMAS is an interview with the teacher to determine early mathematics skills. The following skills are measured:
Geometry - the ability to idenitify and describe shapes
Patterning - the ability to see, play with, and build patterns
Numeracy - the knowledge of numbers and their value in the real world
Computation - the ability to do simple adding or subtracting
Counting - the highest number counted
CBRS (Child Behavior Rating Scale)
The CBRS is a checklist completed by the teacher after observing the student in class for several weeks. It is used to measure teacher's perceptions of children's behavior in the school environment. The following skills are measured:
Self-Regulation - the ability to manage emotions, attention, and behaviors in the school environment
Social Skills - the ability to interact with peers and adults and build relationships
