Music
What is music all about?
Music is an integral part of a child's education. We follow the LCPS Music Curriculum and National Standards for Music Education by singing, playing a variety of instruments, listening to and analyzing music, reading and writing music, and performing. Our music room is equipped with many exciting instruments and materials! We use the online resource and curriculum, Quaver.
How often is music class?
Students in grades K-5 receive 50 minutes of music once a week.
What other musical opportunities are available at Potowmack?
- 2nd and 5th Graders each perform a musical during the school year.
- 4th graders perform at Music and Arts Night.
- The PTA sponsors an after-school program which may sometimes include music classes.
Music class reinforces learning in all subjects!
Music is the original Project Based Learning. In Music Class, students solve problems, work as a team, create a product that is shared with the public. What students learn in Music Class connects what they are learning in the classroom with real life.
In Music Class, students extend their reading skills: fluency, comprehension, phonemic awareness, and vocabulary.
In Music Class, students extend their math skills: problem solving, fractions, time, etc.
In Music Class, students extend their science skills by studying sound science and their social studies skills by learning about music in many time periods.
But most of all, in Music Class, students learn humanity, discipline, beauty and self-expression.
