Debate and Speech

Welcome to the Briar Woods Debate and Forensics (Speech) Teams!

Debate, or Forensics build highly sophisticated communication skills, especially useful to students planning to enter professions such as law, teaching, broadcasting, theater, etc. where public speaking is required.  Membership is open to all students in grades 9-12. New members are always welcome; no experience necessary.

Briar Woods Debate Team and Briar Woods Forensics Team compete in the WACFL, the local unit of the National Debate League Association. Team members choose the format and meet in person weekly. Additional practice time may be scheduled as the competition date gets closer.

Debate includes 3 different teams: Public Forum, Lincoln-Douglass and Congress. Participants can join one of the Debate teams and also Speech.  Please keep in mind joining the team requires commitment and time.

If Spanish is your native language, and/or you feel confident debating in Spanish, we are looking to participate in the Spanish Language Policy debate competition at Harvard's University "Debate en EspaƱol."

Interest Meeting TBD

Our teams are looking to filling several Officer positions ASAP! For additional information, please visit our Debate and Forensics Teams'  website.
