ECSE AM TEACHER

Hi! I am so excited to be here at Discovery!  This is my ninth year with Discovery.  Before that, I was a long-term substitute teacher multiple times at various schools.  Before starting my family, I worked as a school psychologist. I earned my undergraduate degree in psychology and computer science at Virginia Tech.  I earned my Specialist in Psychology (Psy. S.) degree from Gallaudet University in DC and my early childhood special education (ECSE) certificate from University of Lynchburg.

My family and I have lived in Ashburn for 26 years, and love it here! My husband and I have three children. All three also went to Virginia Tech!  Kelsey graduated from Virginia Tech and then Marymount for a forensic and legal psychology masters degree.  Sean graduated in sports marketing.  Aidan is starting his senior yeat at Virginia Tech. You might see me going to VT watching my son high jump on the VT track team or tailgating at VT football games.

My class is all about fun.  When my students are having fun, they want to come to school. They learn while they are having fun and playing.  I also work with my families to share strategies that might help at home, and they teach me more about their child at home.

Degrees and Certifications:

Bachelor of Science in Communication Sciences & Disorders from James Madison University
Master's in Early Childhood Special Education from Old Dominion University

I am so excited to be beginning my 20th year of teaching here at Discovery!  I was born and raised in Franklin, Virginia (about an hour west of VA Beach) and graduated from James Madison University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Communication Sciences and Disorders, focusing on both audiology and speech pathology.  During my last year in Harrisonburg, I began working specifically with preschool special education classes and fell in love with the children and classes I worked with.  After college, I decided to move to Virginia Beach, where my parents had relocated, and earned a Master’s Degree in Early Childhood Special Education from Old Dominion University.  My husband’s job brought my family to Loudoun County during August 2015.  I have taught in Chesapeake, Virginia Beach, a regional autism program in Hampton Roads, and Loudoun & Fairfax Counties.  Although I have taught K-4 in the past, preschool is the age I love the most and have spent the most time teaching.

I met my husband, Matt, while working through grad school, and we recently celebrated our 18th  wedding anniversary this past summer.  We live in Stone Ridge with our three sons, Benjamin, Elijah, and Andrew, and our dog, Callie.  Our boys all play baseball and when we are not at the field, I enjoy spending time with my family, running/exercising, crafting, gardening, reading, and cooking.
