The English Learner (EL) Program at Discovery

The EL program provides EL students with instruction in the English language by emphasizing listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills through the use of a structured English language approach.

We (the EL teachers at Discovery) work with grade level teachers and may provide language, math and reading intervention services to EL students and to other students who need support. We seek to meet individual student needs in the most inclusive environment. We instruct through models that best fit the linguistic level of each student while promoting grade level content and rigor.

I was born in Vietnam but grew up in Los Angeles, California.  For the past 28 years, I have been living in Loudoun County, Virginia.

I graduated from California State University of Northridge (CSUN) with a Bachelor of Arts in Biology and Psychology, and also completed courses in Elementary Education and in Early Childhood Special Education Program there.  In December 2020, I completed the Career Switcher Program at Shenandoah University, with an endorsement in ESOL (English to Speakers of Other Languages).

Working with children has been my calling.  I have worked as an Early Intervention Specialist at the PWC Parent-Infant Education Program, a coach of the Woodgrove HS debate team, an art teacher, a behavior specialist at Psychological Support Services,  a residential group home counselor for the Linden Center, and a teacher assistant in several elementary schools.

I arrived in the U.S. knowing a few English words and only the basics of Vietnamese. However, as I advanced in my education,  I have developed a love for the English Language and I hope to inspire my students to love the language as well.  This will be my third year at Discovery ES as an EL teacher. I will be working with Kindergarten and first-grade students this year. I am looking forward to a wonderful learning discovery  with my students.

As for interests and hobbies, I have too many.  I enjoy reading historical fiction books; gardening, crafting, drawing, painting; and exercising. I have a lifelong fascination with libraries; whichever city I travel to, I will make it my mission to visit one.  Growing up in California has instilled in me a deep appreciation for nature and a love of camping.    I believe in community engagement and volunteerism. Since college, I have been participating in many volunteer activities. I am fluent in Vietnamese, both in writing and speaking.

I am proud to be one of the few members of Discovery's inaugural staff returning this year! This will be my 18th year teaching! I taught first and third-grades for 13 years, and I'm so excited to be continuing my career as an English Learner (EL) Teacher working with our outstanding second-grade team!

I graduated from James Madison University with a Bachelor of Science in Psychology and a Master of Arts in Teaching with a concentration in Early Childhood Education, and I earned my EL Endorsement in 2019. I am also a graduate of our very own Broad Run High School. I was born and raised in Loudoun County, and I currently reside in Aldie with my daughter, who is in middle school, and my son, who is also a proud Discovery Trailblazer.

Outside of school, I enjoy playing with my kids, working out, spending time with family and friends, and listening to music.  My family also vacations often in Myrtle Beach, as my father lives there.

I look forward to another fantastic year with my Trailblazer family!

I am excited about following my 4th graders up to 5th grade and working with this great team of teachers during the 2023-24 school year at Discovery!

As a career switcher, I earned my teaching certification for English Learners (K-12) and Social Sciences (6-12) through EducateVA. Within LCPS, I have been a substitute teacher, a PALS (Phonological Awareness Literary Screening) tutor, and a kindergarten teacher’s aide. Before teaching, I was a stay-at-home mom and a journalist.

In my free time, I enjoy spending time with my family. I love to watch soccer (especially the USWNT and Washington Spirit), and for the last 4 years, I have been the assistant JV girls soccer coach for Tuscarora High School. I also like being outside enjoying nature -- especially in West Virginia where I grew up. My hobbies are reading, gardening, and running.

If you have any questions about the EL program or about your student, please contact me via e-mail.

Mrs. Erica Sreniawski

Mrs. Erica Sreniawski

This is Mrs. Sreniawski's fifth year of teaching and second year at Discovery ES.  She will be working with students in the 3rd grade for the 2023-2024 school year.

Mrs. Sreniawski was born in Brazil, and later moved to Arlington, VA to complete her secondary education.  She has degrees in International Relations of Latin America and Spanish from the College of William and Mary.

Before becoming a teacher, Mrs. Sreniawski was a Communications Technology and Government Consultant, then a Senior Training Specialist for a Fortune 500 company.  Later she ventured into entrepreneurship and became the owner of multiple gyms in the DMV area.

Her teaching experience has varied from being a Spanish teaching assistant at the College of William and Mary, dance choreographer/instructor, and substitute teacher for Loudoun County Public Schools.

Mrs. Sreniawski completed the Career Switcher Program offered at Shenandoah University with an endorsement in English to Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL).  Being an English Learner (EL) Teacher is very meaningful to her because she was once an EL student herself.  She can definitely relate to the students and is eager to help them succeed.

Mrs. Sreniawski loves to dance, learn about different cultures, and travel around the world.  She has been to 30 countries.

Mrs. Sreniawski speaks Portuguese and Spanish.

This year will be my fourth as an EL teacher, and my second as an itinerant teacher at Discovery. I am looking forward to be spending my afternoons here at Discovery Elementary, and my mornings at Dominion Trail Elementary.

While my undergraduate degree is in Economics from Denison University, I started my teaching path in 2016 first as a substitute, and then as a kindergarten assistant teacher. My love of working with students led me to Shenandoah's Career Switcher program in 2020, where I became licensed to teach English Learners. My experience in Spain as a study abroad student in college helped me to understand some of the challenges for students who speak a language other than English in their home. This year I am fortunate to move up with my third grade students from last year to fourth grade!

I live in Ashburn with my husband, three teenage children, our two dogs and two cats. I love to read, play volleyball, do DIY home projects and foster cats through a local shelter.

My goal as a teacher is to make learning fun for my students, and to find ways to get them excited about coming to school. I can't wait to celebrate all our successes this year!
