June 25 marked a day of thanks and gratitude to Loudoun County's First Responders for LCPS and beyond. The First Responder Cookout appreciation event at Heritage High School pays tribute to first responders across the County who answer the call to protect and serve the community. Hosted by Loudoun County Public Schools (LCPS), the Loudoun First Responder Foundation and the Loudoun Education Foundation, the day serves as a reminder of the brave individuals who put their lives on the line to protect ours every single day.
School Resource Officers and other representatives from Loudoun County Sheriff's Office, Leesburg Police Department, Purcellville Police Department, and Loudoun County Fire and Rescue gathered in the Heritage lunchroom decorated in a red, white, and blue theme including over 300 cupcakes displayed in the shape of an American flag. Heritage High School's Principal, Jeff Adam, and Assistant Principal, Ross Armstrong; LCPS Computer Science Supervisor, Nick Grzeda; Computer Science Facilitators, and community volunteers gathered, prepared, and served more than 600 hot dogs and hamburgers for more than 160 officers, firefighters, EMTS and support canines in attendance.
"Strong community partnerships are essential to the success of a good school division, especially with our first responders," said Superintendent Dr. Aaron Spence. "The safety and well-being of our students is our top priority, but we cannot do it alone. I am grateful to these dedicated individuals and organizations who support our school division and help uplift our community."
The Loudoun heroes in attendance enjoyed side dishes donated by Monk's BBQ and thank-you gifts that included a coffee tumbler, Lifesaver candy, “Hydrating Heros” labeled water and personalized “First Responder” Coca-Colas. LCSO Canines received portable, collapsible watering dishes to help them stay hydrated while on the job.
"This event is a small token of our appreciation for the real heroes who deserve our deepest respect and admiration. Loudoun's first responders support our students and school communities in so many capacities, direct and indirect," Renée Dawson, Director of Family and Community Engagement, shared. "Hosting the First Responders event each year is a way to celebrate those who do not hesitate to respond in times of need. The event also reminds us to say 'thank you for your service in keeping us all safe' to the Loudoun's first responder heroes we see while out and about."
Now in its third year, Dawson hosted the First Responders appreciation event in 2021 while serving as the Principal at Brambleton Middle School. She partnered with the Loudoun First Responder Foundation and expanded the event's impact through the central office in 2022. Both the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office and Loudoun First Responder Foundation presented Renee Dawson with a Challenge Coin to honor her unyielding commitment to and support for First Responders.
