Mission

Our mission is to encourage scientific and intellectual thought and advance the students’ knowledge of classical and modern science. You will not only be able to gain opportunities to volunteer for science-oriented activities, but also to obtain information about independent science research, science-oriented summer activities, scholarships, and different careers in the field of science. The members will have to complete the required service hours that will be executed in the fields related to science-which includes tutoring, lab assisting, etc.

Eligibility Guidelines:

A student must have and maintain a 3.5-grade point average and a 3.75 science grade point average to be a member. In addition, the following qualifications must be met and maintained:

  • A member must be enrolled in at least one honors or AP science class during or prior to the tenth-grade year.

  • A member must maintain a B+ average (or equivalent) across all science courses.

Expectations:

We expect our members to achieve above and beyond in the field of science, but our specific requirements are very minimal:

  • Finish the minimum required hours of community service in the area related to

    science every semester

  • Seniors: 8 hours

  • Juniors: 6 hours

  • Sophomores: 5 hours

Only seniors will get cords.
Ms. Karandikar will approve if a senior should get a cord.
The cords can be collected on

Please fill out the

SNHS Application Form (available on the page "application" on the SNHS website) by Oct 16th.

Members must reapply each school year.

Volunteer Opportunities and how to submit hrs

All members must submit Volunteer hours for semester 1 and semester 2 volunteer hrs virtually.

You must log in to your LCPS account in order to get access to this google form.

Click on the Google Form for Semester 1 Volunteer Hrs submissionto submit 1st semester hours. You must log in to your LCPS account in order to get access to this Google Form

Click on the Google Form for Semester 2 Volunteer Hrs submissionto submit 2nd semester hours. You must log in to your LCPS account in order to get access to this Google Form

Minimum requirement hours of community service every semester
o Seniors: 8 hour (4hrs science-related)
o Juniors: 6 hours (3hrs science-related)
o Sophomores: 5 hours (2.5hrs science-related)

You will need to submit proof of volunteering (pictures/documents).

You must maintain a Google folder of screenshots from each time you have volunteered. Then share a link to that Google folder (as the answer to the last question on the Volunteer hrs form) so that we will have access to your folder and see all the screenshots.

The screenshots must clearly show your name & volunteer hrs (if you did volunteer in a virtual setting Ex. Doctors without Borders) or a picture of a document "volunteer Hours Sheet"

The picture must include the following:

  • Name of the beneficiary,

  • Email ID of the beneficiary,

  • Tel # of the beneficiary,

  • Date, number of hrs volunteered

  • The beneficiary sign is clearly visible.

A beneficiary who signs must be an adult (preferably an LCPS teacher who oversees the tutoring program or a parent whose child received tutoring).

Please tell the beneficiary to expect communication from the SNHS sponsor & officers and respond to it so that your volunteer hrs will be accepted.

Did you get paid for tutoring? If yes, that will not be considered volunteer work.

If you are submitting the same tutoring volunteer hrs to any other honor society (or if it is fulling the volunteer hrs requirement for any other club), then those same hrs cannot be acceptable for SNHS

Volunteer Opportunities:

Soumya Kosoor

Hi everybody! We are Soumya and Sarah, and we are the senior co-presidents!  We will be conducting two main projects this year, the first being Basic Sci!

BasicSci is a site dedicated to helping science students feel prepared in their respective subjects. SNHS members can upload notes/study guides about various topics to help other students in the science classes around SBHS. BasicSci covers notes for multiple topics in Earth Science, Biology, Chemistry, and Physics (we will be expanding to AP Sciences this year, so if you have AP Science notes, you can submit those as well). You will have to check the master topic list and create a set of notes based on what is available. If you develop a set of notes that isn’t from one of these topics but still feel they would be beneficial, indicate it on the submission form. Submitting a set of notes or submitting a complete study guide will give you 1 hour of volunteer time.

Basic Sci also covers notes about various scientific passions. If you have a niche science interest, such as space or technology, that isn't on the master topic list but is still interesting, you can create a 2-page informational document about your topic! This will grant you an hour and thirty minutes of volunteering time.

Submitting documents is an easy, fun way to earn hours from home!

NOTE: All notes/documents/study guides must follow the guidelines on the Google form for submission and the master topic list. If a note submission does not follow these guidelines, it will be rejected, and you will have to resubmit with a submission that follows the guidelines.

The second activity which we will be assisting with which may grant volunteer hours is the Stone Bridge Red Cross Club. The SBHS Red Cross Club conducts volunteer drives, community outreach events, and activities related to the Red Cross. By joining the SBHS Red Cross club, you become an official Red Cross Volunteer, and the volunteer hours that you earn from events can be applied to SNHS as well as any kind of resume or college application. The Red Cross Club is not directly associated with SNHS in any way. However, it is still an amazing opportunity to gain additional community service hours and work with other like-minded individuals in our SBHS community!

Amanda Chin

Hi! My name is Amanda Chin and I am a junior! One great volunteer opportunity that we will have for members to get their service hours is tutoring sessions! As students ask for help in their science courses, members will get matched with a student based on what subject the student needs help in and the day the tutoring session will take place. Once we match up a tutor and student, we will send an email to both of them asking to confirm the session date. Tutoring sessions are always held in the morning from 8:30am-9:20am and one session counts as one volunteer hour. Members can also tutor outside of school, as long as the hours won’t count towards other clubs/organizations, the tutoring session is NOT paid, and the tutoring session is NOT for a family member. Tutoring is a great way to support the Stone Bridge community and spread the knowledge of science!

Another fun volunteer opportunity is science debates! These debates will take place at the start of each month, usually in the first week or so of the month. Each debate will have a different topic related to all parts of science! Some examples of topics are which branch of science is the best (chemistry, biology, physics, etc.), whether AI/robots should be used in the medical field, and if certain drugs should be used for medical purposes. A Google form will be sent out a week before each debate, revealing the debate topic and time/date. All debates will be one hour long, some before school and some after school. Members can sign up for the debate and choose which side they will argue for. In the debate session, there is no specific structure of how the debate will run, it is more of a discussion/sharing of opinions between the two sides. In the end, the winning side will get candy!

Email if you have any questions!

Isabella Grados

Hey! I'm Isabella Grados and I'm one of the junior co-presidents. This year I’m creating a new volunteer opportunity that's an extension to the tutoring program, a mentorship program!

SNHS members will have the opportunity to create long lasting, collaborative mentoring relationships with students. Mentors will help students who need long term extra guidance to develop their problem solving skills, study skills, and more! The process of mentoring is the same as tutoring; members will get matched with a student based on what subject the student needs help in and the day(s) the mentoring sessions will take place. Once we match up a mentor and student, we will send an email to both of them asking to confirm the session date. Mentoring sessions are always held in the morning from 8:30am-9:20am and one session counts as one volunteer hour. Members can also mentor outside of school, as long as the hours won’t count towards other clubs/organizations, the mentoring session is NOT paid, and the session is NOT for a family member. The help mentors offer go beyond specific homework questions, as they help students build foundations for positive study and learning habits.

  • Use this doc as a rough timeline to what mentoring would look like: Mentoring Timeline

  • Use this doc to create study plans with your student: Study Plan Template

  • Sign ups for students and mentors coming soon!

  • Email me with any questions

Medha Nalumachu

My plan for SNHS is to hold a meeting where everyone comes together and could talk about what part of science interests them. For example if someone is interested in Biology and someone else is interested in Physics, they can write about it and share what they wrote or they could just come without any writing. It would be like a Socratic Seminar but fun!
