Special Education - Learning Resource

Welcome to the Stone Bridge Learning Resource Department! The members of our department serve many roles within the building and are committed to providing equal access to education for students of all learning types. LCPS is currently on Summer Vacation. If you are needing assistance please contact Kaitlin Sommer (Assistant Principal), Kacy Nielsen (Dean of Special Education), or Angie Powner (Department Chair of Special Education). We hope everyone has a wonderful summer break.

Documents related to a student's IEP can be accessed through a parent portal EdPlan Connect. Information and tutorials Virginia IEP and the Parent Portal can be found on the LCPS Special Education Website.

Stone Bridge High School is recognized as Unified Champion School by Special Olympics! Our Coaches are Jillian Lauer, Kathryn Zielinski, and Ann Duffy.

Students with intellectual disabilities and students without disabilities are eligible to participate. Eligibility as an athlete is determined based on Special Olympics criteria. General education students will be paired with a student with a disability to be an athletic partner. Currently, at SBHS we have basketball and track as offerings.  We are hoping to add Bocce for a fall sport in the near future!

Graduation and Testing Accommodations

Testing Accommodations

Testing accommodations are handled in two different ways:

  • SBHS and LCPS handle SOL testing and other school-based testing following students’ documentation.

  • Accommodations for the College Board and other independent testing are approved by an external review board separate from the school-based IEP team

If a student needs accommodations for an external test, the school counselor and parent work together to submit the application. Please allow plenty of time for this process as it typically takes seven to eight weeks for a decision. For more information about PSATs visit the Stone Bridge Counseling Website

Special Education Transition Teacher

The special education transition teacher, Matthew Holcomb, is the link between LCPS and Loudoun County Agencies such as DARS and CSB. In general, our transition teacher consults with our case managers and students during their freshmen and sophomore years as needed to support them. During a student’s junior and senior years, the transition teacher works more closely with the case managers, students, and families to support career goals. Post-secondary support is highly individualized so the timeline can vary depending on the needs of the student.
