BWHS College Application Checklist
September
attend the LCPS college fair
check the schedule of college visits to the career center.
get involved in extracurricular and/or community activities such as school clubs, sports, volunteer work, etc.
October
take the PSAT
attend meetings in the career center with college representatives.
explore different kinds of higher education— check the career center in the guidance office for these resources: 1. current college guides which describe colleges throughout the U.S. (example: college board college handbook), 2. individual college and technical school catalogs as well as information on the armed services, 3. use internet resources to explore/gather information about college web sites.
begin to explore financial resources: financial aid, scholarships, student loans, etc.
register for spring sat (www.collegeboard.org) and/or act (www.act.org).
November, December
continue to explore post-high school options (college, military, employment, etc.).
continue to sign up to attend college representative visits to the career center.
when you receive your PSAT scores, meet with your counselor if you have questions about your scores.
January
decide what type of college you are looking for (two-year/four-year, public/private, liberal arts/technical).
decide what factors are important to you (location, setting, size, etc.).
begin to prepare for the SAT/ACT.
February
meet with your school counselor to begin preparing a list of colleges to explore. use computers, view books, and other resources to gather information on colleges.
meet with your counselor to select challenging courses for your senior year.
start to plan spring college open house visits.
March/April/May/June
request information from colleges; write or use the internet.
attend college open houses.
refine list of colleges.
take sat/act/sat subject tests.
plan summer college visits.
Summer:
visit and tour colleges.
schedule interviews if required.
continue to refine list of colleges.
gather information needed for college applications.
work on college essay.
develop an activity resume.
