Role & Mission of a Family Liaison

Mission and Background:

The mission of the Family Liaison Program is to empower parents by assisting with communication between school and home and positively influencing student achievement.

What is a Family Liaison?

A Family Liaison is employed by the LCPS to help parents/guardian get the information and support they need to help their student(s) be academically and socially successful in school.

What can the Family Liaison do for me?

The Family Liaison's primary role is to assist parents/guardian in taking an active role in their student(s) education by empowering parents to help their student by:

  • Helping parent/guardian with school communication.

  • Helping with community agency referrals.

  • Encouraging parent/guardian involvement in school.

  • Promoting higher student achievement through positive relationships between parents/guardian and school personnel.

A Family Liaison can:

  • help you arrange meetings between you and your student(s) teachers or other staff to discuss your concerns, share information and understand your point of view.

  • accompany you to these meetings to help clarify issues that may arise.  If you need an interpreter, the Family Liaison can arrange one for you to communicate with your student(s) teachers.

If you, as a parent or guardian have concerns about your student(s) academic performance, are unclear of your role in the educational process, or require assistance with community resources, contact Maria Guerra at 571-434-4412. All contacts will be treated confidentially.

Who can request Family Liaison Services?

The Family Liaison's assistance may be requested by:

  • Parent

  • Teacher

  • Guidance Counselor

How can my Family Liaison help me?

Sometimes family members may feel uncomfortable sharing their questions or concerns with teachers or administrators. Because good communication between home and school is such a vital part of your student's academic success, the Family Liaison, will listen to your concerns and then work with you to make sure that your situation, questions, or point of view is expressed and understood. They will help support you if you need to find ways to resolve any issues that may be hindering your student's success in school. The Family Liaison wants to be sure that you understand what you can do to get involved, keep informed, share information, and help your student do their BEST.
