Reading Groups

At Sugarland, the Reading Team works with children in small groups. Children are identified for these groups based on many educational criteria and assessments. We work on supporting the instruction that is taking place in the classrooms. Focus in these groups is based on the needs that are indicated through assessments and observations. These needs are met through a variety of instructional activities which may include: reading appropriately leveled books, word work, word study, poetry and comprehension activities. The children are seen 3 to 5 times a week depending on the type of group they are in. As children progress and show more independence, they are exited from their intervention group to continue reading support with their teacher in the classroom setting. If you have any questions about your child's placement in one of these groups, please feel free to contact us. We will be glad to talk with you.

The Role of the Reading Team

In addition to planning and providing instruction for students, the reading team provides training and resources to classroom teachers, administers and oversees assessments, maintains the guided reading library, orders materials for literacy instruction, trains and schedules tutors and volunteers, and plans activities to promote reading in our school. Members of the reading team attend child study meetings, parent conferences and provide training and materials to parents.
