ENERGY STAR Partner of the Year
Loudoun County Public Schools (LCPS) has earned the 2024 ENERGY STAR Partner of the Year Award for Sustained Excellence from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the U.S. Department of Energy. This is the 13th year that LCPS has earned the Sustained Excellence Award, which is the highest honor in this competitive awards program. LCPS is the only school system with 13 years as a Sustained Excellence Partner.
“We are thrilled to be named an ENERGY STAR Partner of the Year for Sustained Excellence for the 13th consecutive year,” said Clark Seipt, LCPS Director of Sustainability. “This recognition is an exceptional way to honor the commitment and hard work of our schools and our construction, facilities operations and energy management teams. When our school community rallies together for energy efficiency and responsible resource use, great things can happen.”
The Sustained Excellence Award is awarded to organizations that adopt a continuous energy management strategy and apply it to their entire portfolio of buildings.
LCPS has a long-standing commitment to reducing costs and demonstrating good stewardship of public resources while promoting energy efficiency through ENERGY STAR. Key 2023 accomplishments include:
Achieving ENERGY STAR certification at 30 schools in 2023 and reducing the district site energy use intensity (EUI) by 2.6% from 2022 to 2023.
Saving more than $8.7 million in utility costs in 2023 and over $119 million over the past 30 years.
Investing $19.5 million in high efficiency upgrades to two 30-year-old school buildings, with a projected $52,000 in annual savings.
Bringing 2,263 kW of renewable energy generation online at 6 schools in 2023, making LCPS total solar production capability more than 6,500 kW.
Incorporating 6 electric buses into the district’s school bus fleet, and 6 Chevrolet Volts for driver ed vehicles.
2023
LCPS has been awarded 2023 ENERGY STAR Partner of the Year Sustained Excellence Award for the 12th consecutive year. Nationally, LCPS is one of 74 organizations and the only school system with over 10 years as a Sustained Excellence Partner!
The Sustained Excellence Award is the highest honor the ENERGY STAR program awards. We are proud to be part of a distinguished group making and sustaining important contributions in the clean energy transition. 2022 Key Accomplishments included:
Saving over $7.2 million on energy costs in 2022 avoiding 490,000 metric tons of CO2 emissions over the past 30 years.
Achieving ENERGY STAR certification at two schools for the first time, 26 overall.
Focusing on 28 buildings to incorporate 15 different energy conservation and efficiency measures including building automation systems, solar photovoltaic arrays, LED lighting retrofits & replacements, and HVAC improvements
LCPS achieved perfect score for ENERGY STAR Decarbonize Your Design Challenge, exemplifying excellence in energy efficient and CO2 reduction design.
In addition, LCPS earned 26 2022 ENERGY STAR Building Certifications. These schools meet strict energy performance standards set by the EPA they all use less energy, and are less expensive to operate, producing fewer greenhouse gas emissions than like kind buildings. The Sustained Excellence Award is the highest honor the ENERGY STAR program awards. We are proud to be part of a distinguished group making and sustaining important contributions in the clean energy transition. 2021 Key Accomplishments included:
Saving over $8.6 million on energy costs and avoiding 31,732 metric tons of CO2 emissions.
Achieving ENERGY STAR certification at three new schools, 17 overall.
Retrofitting two elementary schools with geothermal systems in place of old fuel oil boilers, as well as installing more than 2,100 kW of solar capacity at seven schools.
Participating in the submission of two design projects to the ENERGY STAR Decarbonize Your Design Challenge, including an elementary school expected to reduce energy use by nearly 70 percent.
In addition, LCPS earned 17 2021 ENERGY STAR's. These schools meet strict energy performance standards set by the EPA and uses less energy, is less expensive to operate, and causes fewer greenhouse gas emissions than their peers. The schools with the * are first-time winners.
