Radon Testing and Mitigation Program

Loudoun County Public Schools strives to maintain healthy educational facilities for students, staff, and visitors. As part of this effort, LCPS complies with the Commonwealth of Virginia regulation governing radon in public school buildings (VAC § 22.1-138) and follows U.S. EPA guidelines for testing and mitigation of radon in its facilities.

LCPS has been testing for radon in its schools since the late 1980s. Comprehensive systemwide testing of all LCPS facilities began in 1993. Buildings and additions constructed after 1994 have been tested after completion of construction. All radon test results are reported to the Virginia Department of Health (VDH).

The LCPS Environmental Health and Safety Division coordinates the installation of mitigation systems where required, performs periodic inspections and maintenance of mitigation systems, and conducts periodic record reviews and re-testing. Testing and mitigation procedures over the years have adapted to comply with updates to applicable guidelines from the U.S. EPA, VDH, and industry best practices.

LCPS does not currently conduct system-wide cyclical retesting. Facilities are tested following construction (additions, renovations, or new construction) and after the completion of other capital projects with the potential to impact airflow patterns, such as large HVAC upgrades. In facilities where active mitigation systems are installed, retesting will be conducted on a two-year cycle.

Radon at Home
School is not the primary place where students and teachers can be exposed to radon. Because children spend only about 20 percent of their time at school, the EPA recommends that every home also should be tested. We encourage all members of the LCPS community to test their homes for radon and take corrective actions if needed.

If parents, guardians, or staff are interested in learning more and testing their home for radon, more information can be found at the following links:
