Energy Program Savings
1993 through August 2024: LCPS has avoided $125,785,303
This is equivalent to:
Cars not driven for one year: 103,197
Tree seedlings grown for 10 years: 12,701,168
Metric tons of CO2: 495,346
Loudoun County Public Schools (LCPS) has earned the 2024 ENERGY STAR Partner of the Year Award for Sustained Excellence from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the U.S. Department of Energy. This is the 13th year that LCPS has earned the Sustained Excellence Award, which is the highest honor in this competitive awards program. LCPS is the only school system with 13 years as a Sustained Excellence Partner.
The Sustained Excellence Award is awarded to organizations that adopt a continuous energy management strategy and apply it to their entire portfolio of buildings. Key 2023 LCPS accomplishments which contributed to its award included:
Reducing the school division’s energy use intensity (EUI) by 2.6% from 2022 to 2023.
Saving more than $8.7 million in utility costs in 2023 and over $119 million over the past 30 years.
Investing $19.5 million in high-efficiency upgrades to two 30-year-old school buildings, with a projected $52,000 in annual savings.
Bringing 2,263 kW of renewable energy generation online at six schools in 2023, making LCPS' total solar production capability more than 6,500 kW.
Incorporating six electric buses into the division’s school bus fleet and six Chevrolet Volts for driver education vehicles.
“We are thrilled to be named an ENERGY STAR Partner of the Year for Sustained Excellence for the 13th consecutive year,” said Clark Seipt, LCPS Director of Sustainability. “This recognition is an exceptional way to honor the commitment and hard work of our schools and our construction, facilities operations and energy management teams. When our school community rallies together for energy efficiency and responsible resource use, great things can happen.”
LCPS also earned 30 2023 ENERGY STAR Building Certifications for the schools listed below. These schools meet strict energy performance standards as set by the EPA. To achieve the ENERGY STAR Building Certification, a building must be independently verified to operate more efficiently than 75 percent of similar properties nationwide. In simpler terms, these schools use less energy and are less expensive to operate, producing fewer greenhouse gas emissions than similar size and type buildings.
