Safe Routes to School Projects

Loudoun County Public Schools (LCPS), in coordination with the County of Loudoun, participates in the federally-funded Virginia Safe Routes to School (SRTS) program.  The federal SRTS program was established to enable and encourage children to walk and bicycle to school, promote a healthier and more active lifestyle from an early age, and facilitate the implementation of projects that will not only improve safety but also reduce traffic, fuel consumption, and air pollution near schools.

In 2014 and 2015, LCPS received SRTS funding in the amount of $1,035,747, including the local twenty percent (20%) match, for the improvement of sidewalks and trails for student and parent use within select school walk zones.

Through this program, improvements have been made within the walk zones of Mill Run Elementary School, Broad Run High School, and Stone Bridge High School.  Remaining SRTS funds are being utilized for a Countryside Elementary School pedestrian improvement project along Tripleseven Road.

SRTS funding applications are accepted every two years with the next opportunity in 2025.
