Throughout the year, LCPS scholars are assessed in reading and writing in a number of ways. Scholars in grades K-2 are administered VALLS, Virginia Language and Literacy Screener and some 3rd grade scholars are administered PALS, the Phonological Awareness Literacy Screening, and in grades 2-5 they are assessed with the MAP, Measures of Academic Progress. In grades 3-5, they are also assessed using the VGA, Virginia Growth Assessment.

VALLS

During the months of September and October, teachers in grades K-2 will be giving the VALLS assessment screener. The information we gather from these assessments will show areas of strength and challenges in literacy in our scholars and help us better plan and guide our reading instruction for them.

PALS

(Phonological Awareness Literacy Screening)

During the month of September, teachers will be giving the PALS assessment in grade 3 to any 3rd grader new to VA or who received summer intervention. The information we gather from the assessment will show us the areas of strength and challenges in literacy in our scholars and and help guide our reading instruction for them.
