Kindergarten Exemption

Under the compulsory attendance laws of Virginia, a child whose fifth birthday falls on or before September 30 of a given year must be enrolled in school for that school year.  However, a child's attendance may be delayed for one year if, in the opinion of the parent or guardian, the child is not mentally, physically, or emotionally prepared to attend school:

Loudoun County School Board Policy 8120

Code of Virginia  §  22.1-254

State law requires that any parent of a child being excused from school attendance shall comply with the immunization requirements provided in Code of Virginia §32.1-46 in the same manner and to the same extent as if the child has been enrolled in and is attending school.

You must inform the Department of Student Services in writing or via email if you decide not to register your child for kindergarten.  Please include your name, address and your child's full name and date of birth. You will receive a confirmation letter from Student Services in July or August before the school year is to begin.

A letter may be sent to Gabrielle Carpenter,  Student Services Coordinator, Loudoun County Public Schools, 21000 Education Court, Ashburn, VA 20148. You may also scan/email your request to email Dawn Mahoney or email Gabrielle Carpenter or fax to (571) 252-1242.
