Positive Behavior Intervention and Supports (PBIS)

What is PBIS?

PBIS is an evidence-based, tiered framework for supporting and improving students' behavioral, emotional, social, and academic outcomes.

Where can I see PBIS extending into my Community?

With help from local grocery stores like Wegmans and Harris Teeter, Pinebrook students and staff collected a total of 1,175 boxes of cereal, which will be donated to the Dulles South Food Pantry following our Dominoes Run on Friday, May 10, 2024.  What a difference this donation will make to so many families in our community!

Where can I see PBIS in action at Pinebrook?

Through our House System!

In classrooms throughout the school, our students, the "Pinebrook Pumas", receive ongoing coaching on what it looks like to be Ready, Responsible, and Respectful (the "3 R's").

In our hallways, learning spaces, and cafeteria, we see reminders of how to make Pinebrook a great place to learn.

House System

Houses

The House System at Pinebrook Elementary made its debut on January 5, 2023.  This exciting new initiative is designed to create community within the school.  Students and staff members were randomly assigned to one of six (6) houses.  Each "house" is a mix of staff members and students from different grades and classrooms.  This allows members of the Pinebrook community to engage with students and adults they would not normally have an opportunity to see.

The house names were developed by highlighting regions where pumas live.

Yosemite (red), Sonoran (orange), Yukon (yellow/gold), Everglades (green), Andes (blue), and Patagonia (purple).

Students will keep their house assignment for the duration of their term at Pinebrook.

Fridays are House Color Days.  Students and staff wear clothing (bandannas, bracelets, socks, shirts, pants, headbands, etc.) with their house color, or they can choose to wear Pinebrook Spiritwear.

Pinebrook uses digital House Points.  Any staff member (teacher, custodian, librarian, cafeteria hostess, PE teacher, etc.) can award a House Point anytime they see a student going above and beyond to demonstrate the 3R's.

Some ways students can earn a House Point include:

  • Acts of kindness

  • Perserverance

  • Focus & Effort

  • Leadership

  • Teamwork

  • Exemplar behavior in the cafeteria, hallways, or with a substitute

The 7 Habits

This year students will be learning, practicing and demonstrating the 7 Habits of Happy Kids. We will learn these 7 Habits throughout the year in our house meetings. Learning these habits will help our students be successful community members and leaders here at Pinebrook and beyond.

  1. Be Proactive

  2. Begin With the End in Mind

  3. Put First Things First

  4. Think Win-Win

  5. Seek first to understand, then to be understood

  6. Synergize

  7. Sharpen the Saw

Throughout the year we will recognize students who are working hard to demonstrate the focus habit. These students will be called our “Habit Heroes.”
