Mission Statement:
The mission of this Library Media Program is to work with both staff and students to support the goals and objectives of Ashburn Elementary School by providing access to information resources and services and promoting excitement about reading. We will also strive to create a community of users who are information literate by helping students and faculty learn to locate and evaluate information as well as apply it responsibly.

Checkout Policy:

  • Pre-kindergarten, Kindergartners, and 1st graders may check out two books and may keep those books for two weeks.

  • 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders may check out two books and may keep them for two weeks.

We have a "personalized learning library", which means that should students finish a book that they are reading, they are encouraged not to wait until it is library day for their class but instead go to the library to check out a new book.

Overdue Policy:
There are no fines for overdue books. Students may not exceed the allotted number of books allowed to students in their grade level. Therefore, every time a student returns a book they may check out a new one. Overdue reminders will be sent home when students have books that are more than a few weeks overdue.  Typically, we will send notices at the end of the quarter to ensure that you are aware of books that your student has.

Fines for Lost Books:
If a student loses a book, the student's family may pay for the book in order to reinstate borrowing privileges using the following methods: 1. cash payment, 2. check made out to Ashburn Elementary Library, or 3. purchase a hardbound replacement copy from Amazon. However, a family chooses to replace a book, they will need to notify the Librarian in advance of their decision, please.

A refund will not be given for a book that is later found, if a replacement book has already been purchased/ordered.  We make every effort to have students and families locate missing books prior to charging for its replacement.

Please Make Every Effort To Find Library Books Before Paying For Them!

Birthday Book Program

The Birthday Book Program was initiated in the Fall of 2010 to provide parents with a different option for celebrating their children's birthdays.  By contributing $20.00 to the Birthday Book Program, a student is invited to come to the library on his or her birthday and select a new book to become his or her birthday book.  A name plate is placed on the inside front cover bearing that child's first name.  The birthday boy or girl is then given the privilege of being the first person to check that book out.  The book then remains in the library for other children to enjoy.  Children delight in having their own special book in the library and their friends enjoy seeing their names in the books.  The Birthday Book Program is a wonderful way to honor your child's birthday and also give something that the rest of the school will enjoy for years to come.

If you are interested in contributing to this program, please click on the link below to download the registration form.  Send the completed registration form and cash/check made payable to Ashburn Elementary School in an envelope to the Librarian in the library.  The Librarian will email when the envelope is received.
