Welcome to the Library!

"Where reading IS what we do!"

  • Teacher-Librarian: Ms. Howe-Freeman

  • Library Assistant: Mrs. Bowers

Mission Statement: The mission of this Library Media Program is to work with students and faculty to support the goals and objectives of Ashburn Elementary School by promoting excitement about reading and providing access to informational resources/services. We will also strive to create an information literate community of patrons helping students and faculty learn how to locate, evaluate, and apply information responsibly.

Checkout Policy: We are a “personalized learning library”, which means that once a student completes their reading of a book, they are encouraged NOT to wait until library day to get a new book. They are encouraged to ask their teacher to come to the library to check out another book as soon as possible. The library is always open EXCEPT for when Library Staff are having lunch.

Pre-kindergarten may check out 1 board book every week and return them to the library every week for a new one.

Kindergartners, 1st graders, and 2nd graders may check out 1 library book every other week during the first quarter as they learn about book care. Students may keep those books for two weeks. After the 1st quarter, students may check out 2 library books.

3rd, 4th, and 5th graders may check out 2 library books and may keep them for two weeks.

Overdue Policy: There are no fines for overdue books (books that have been out past their 2 week due date). Students may not exceed the allotted number of books allowed to students in their grade level. Therefore, every time a student returns a book they may check out a new one. An overdue reminder will be sent once the book is 2 weeks past the due date. Typically, we will send notices at the end of the quarter to ensure that you are aware of books that your student has so that they may be returned.

We may make every effort to have students and families locate missing books prior to charging you for its replacement. Look in your student’s classroom library, desk, backpack, under their bed, etc. Therefore, a refund will not be given for a book that is later found, especially if a replacement book has already been purchased/ordered.

Please Make Every Effort To Find Library Books BEFORE Paying For THEM!

Birthday Book Program

The Birthday Book Program was initiated Fall of 2010 to provide parents with a different option for celebrating their child’s birthday. By donating $20.00 to the Birthday Book Program, a child is invited to the Library during their birthday month to select a brand new library book to become his/her birthday book. A name plate will be placed inside the front cover bearing the child’s first name. The Birthday Boy/Girl is then given the privilege of being the 1st person to “check out” the book and keep it to read for 2 weeks. The book, once returned, will remain in the Library to become part of the Ashburn Elementary Library collection for other students to enjoy. Children delight in having their own special book in the library and their friends enjoy seeing their names in the books. The Birthday Book Program is a wonderful way to honor your child’s birthday and to also leave something that the rest of the school will enjoy for years to come!

If you are interested in contributing to this program, please click on the link to download the registration form. Send the completed form with cash/check made payable to Ashburn Elementary School Library in an envelope to the Librarian in the library.
