How is this literacy program conducted in the classroom?

The students are involved in large group, small group, and independent activities during the reading and writing block. Lessons are conducted in the classrooms. The students work the 5 pillars of literacy including:

Ms. Sarah Kingsolver

Hello Dominion Trail!  My name is Sarah Kingsolver and I love being in the Husky Family as the full-time Reading Specialist. This is my 23rd year in education.  The last 17 years have been as a Reading Specialist, with this as my 9th year as a Husky!  At the start of my career, I taught 4th grade in Fairfax County for 6 years.

I am from New England. I grew up in Connecticut and went to school at Keene State College in New Hampshire where I earned my Bachelors of Science degree in Elementary Education and Developmental Psychology. I earned my Masters in Reading and Literacy from Shenandoah University in 2006.

I love to read children’s books any chance I get, especially when I can read to children.  I also enjoy being outdoors. I love swimming, camping, nature, and taking picture of flowers and beautiful outdoor scenery.  Spending time with my family is my most favorite thing to do. My husband and I have 2 daughters who are husky graduates and a son, who is a DTES 1st grader. I am thankful to be a part of a such a terrific school and ready for another exciting DTES year. #HUSKYKIND

Mrs. Parker

Hello, I am Mrs. Terrie Parker.  I am one of the Reading Specialists on the reading team at Dominion Trail Elementary. It is with excitement that I look forward to another great year with the children, the parents and the Husky community!

Originally a native of Southwestern Pennsylvania.  I attended California University of Pennsylvania where I received both my Bachelor in Early Childhood and Elementary Education, as well as, my Masters in Reading.

As a child my passion was “teaching and reading” to my stuffed animals.  One of my favorite books to read was, Bread and Jam for Francis. Fortunately, my childhood passion has followed me throughout my career of nearly thirty years.  Each year is a new adventure in my growth as a professional. I also look forward to sharing in the growth and excitement of the students in my classroom!

I strive to produce a safe, engaging, and loving environment. Lessons provide many exciting and hands-on learning opportunities for my students to achieve their goal of becoming a life-long reader. Students will experience a classroom atmosphere of kindness and respect. This helps each student to feel welcomed, comfortable, and inspired to be an active learner in their reading lives.

When I am not at Dominion Trail  Elementary School, you can find me appreciating time with my family. My husband and I enjoy life with our two adult daughters, our adult son and our maltipoo, Riley. As a family we enjoy playing games, trying new foods, sharing stories, and various traveling experiences. I also enjoy the fellowship with friends and extended family, crafting, taking long walks and reading with a hot cup of coffee!

Please feel free to contact me at any time with questions or concerns. Thank you in advance for your involvement, support, and interest in this school year. Go Huskies!!!

URMAN

Ms. Turman

I am happy to begin a new chapter in my education career as an Intinerant Reading Specialist. This year, I will be supporting Dominion Trail in the morning and Potowmack Elementary in the afternoon. It is an honor to be part of two wonderful learning communities. I recently earned my Reading Endorsement and English Endorsements from Longwood University. I earned my Masters in Curriculum and Instruction from George Mason University and completed my student teaching at Dominion Elementary. This year is my 13th year teaching. Prior to this year, I previously taught second, fourth and fifth grades as well as summer school.

I did not start out to be a teacher, although my mom told me often that I would enjoy it. (She was right!) I earned a Bachelor’s of Science in Business Administration and Marketing from Longwood University and was a Marketing Product Manager for IT government contractors before switching careers. My time in the IT sector gave me a love for gadgets, technology and the Internet. I also learned how important it was to be a life-long learner and reader. I am thankful that I took a chance and made the switch to teaching. It has been a pleasure to work with students and see them grow and develop the skills they need to be a life-long learner.

I am an avid reader and learner and I strive to create a classroom environment where students are encouraged to be independent life-long learners. I believe that if you can read, you can learn anything. In second grade, students transition from decoding to comprehension. I believe it is important for students to have choice in book selection during this transition and learn to read a variety of books. When a student is excited about a topic, series or subject, I will find a book to feed that excitement. One of my favorite things to do is to talk about books and learning with students. It is this love of reading and learning that prompted me to pursue my position as a reading specialist.

I grew up on a cattle ranch outside Sperryville, Virginia. Our farm is in the mountains and borders the Shenandoah National Park. I love to share stories from the ranch and farm dog, Bell.  When not teaching, I volunteer at my church, teaching 2-year-olds and playing saxophone in the orchestra. I serve as a State Chair for the Virginia Daughters of the American Revolution and volunteer on many other DAR committees on the local and national levels.  I can often be found reading or writing when I should be doing something else.
