Mission, Beliefs, and Vision Statements

Mission Statement

The mission of the Hamilton Elementary Counseling program supports the mission of Loudoun County Public schools and our school by providing a developmentally appropriate, comprehensive curriculum to address the academic, career, and personal/social needs of all students. Our program empowers students to be confident, knowledgeable, responsible, and productive citizens in a diverse, ever-changing world.

Belief Statement

All students have diverse strengths, needs, and abilities that contribute to their academic, social, personal, career, and community goals.
All members of the Hamilton Elementary community have the right to access services provided by the school counselor.
The school counselor is a safe person with whom students can share concerns, accomplishments, and personal goals.
As school counselors, we collaborate with the students, teachers, parents, and community members, acting as the bridge for communication, wellness, and school success.

We are the bridge between all stakeholders to help guide students achieve their goals to develop a growth mindset.

The presence of the school counseling program positively impacts the school climate.

School counselors help students to develop a healthy self-concept utilizing their sources of strength and to develop an acceptance of individual differences.

As professional school counselors, we will participate in on-going professional learning opportunities to maintain a strong school counseling program.

The school counseling programs will be aligned with best practices of the American School Counselors Association National Standards, including ethics, confidentiality and data-driven program development.

Vision Statement

Together, entrusted with and accountable to being the bridge for the success of every student.

Why would a parent contact the school counselor?

Parents often call the school counselor to discuss any of the following topics as they relate to their child:

  • Academic achievement

  • Social concerns such as friendship or bullying issues (at school)

  • New school orientation and transition

  • Special needs of students

  • Student crisis situations

  • Family transitions (Divorce/Separation, Loss/Grief)

  • Middle School questions

  • Resources and referrals

Individual Counseling

The school counselor will work with students individually to discuss many issues such as help managing difficult situations or making good choices.  Students may meet with a counselor on an individual basis up to three times before parental permission is required.  However, if it is the professional opinion of the school counselor that the issue being discussed warrants a call home, the student’s parents will be contacted as soon as possible.  If a student is encountering an issue that requires more than three individual meetings with the school counselor, the student may benefit fromm more extension services than school counselors can provide. The school counselor will contact the parent to offer a referral to a local provider.

Students can see the school counselor several ways:

  1. They can tell their parents or teacher they want to see the counselor.

  2. They can write a note or fill out an “I would like to see the counselor” slip (each classroom has these available) and drop it in the mailbox located outside of Mrs. Fulkerson’s office.

  3. Their teacher might recommend that they see the counselor.

  4. An administrator might ask a counselor to meet with a student to explore appropriate behaviors and choices.

  5. Parents can request services.

The counselor might ask to see them or ask if they want to participate in a group or lunch bunch.
