How to Talk to Kids About School Shootings
Hello! I am happy to be at Harper Park for my 25th year as a School Psychologist.
A little about me. I received my undergraduate degree in Psychology, with a minor in Biology, from Virginia Tech and my Masters degree in School Psychology and an Educational Specialist Degree from Radford University. This is my 9th year at Harper Park and I am so happy to be a part of such a strong Unified Mental Health Team. Personally, I live in Leesburg with my husband, two children (15 and 12), one labrador retriever and one cat. When I am not working, I enjoy spending time with family and friends, working out, walking my dog, watching my children play softball and football and doing photography. I have lived in five different countries and love the diversity of Harper Park.
Who are School Psychologists? School psychologists are uniquely qualified members of school teams that support students' ability to learn and teachers' ability to teach. We apply expertise in mental health, learning, and behavior, to help children and youth succeed academically, socially, behaviorally, and emotionally. We partner with families, teachers, school administrators, and other professions to create safe, healthy, and supportive learning environments that strengthen connections between home, school, and the community.
What Do School Psychologists Do? School psychologists provide direct support and interventions to students, consult with teachers, families, and other school-employed mental health professionals (i.e., school counselors, school social workers) to improve support strategies, work with school administrators to improve school-wide practices and policies, and collaborate with community providers to coordinate needed services. They help schools successfully: Improve Academic Achievement, Promote Positive Behavior and Mental Health, Support Diverse Learners, Create Safe, Positive School Climates, Strengthen Family-School Partnerships, and improve School-Wide Assessment and Accountability Monitor individual student progress in academics and behavior.
