Accreditation
A school that is awarded accreditation means the school meets specific standards of educational quality.
Woodgrove is accredited by two accrediting organizations: the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) and Cognia.
The VDOE accreditation is based on nine indicators determined by the Commonwealth. These indicators are:
Academic Achievement - English
Achievement Gap - English
Academic Achievement - Mathematics
Achievement Gap - Mathematics
Academic Achievement - Science
Chronic Absenteeism This is the percent of students in a school who miss 10% or more of their enrolled days during an academic school year.
Graduation and Completion Index (GCI) (This measure only applies to schools with a twelfth grade.) This is a measure for a graduating cohort based on weighted student outcomes. Outcomes include students who earn a diploma, a GED, Certificate of Completion, or remain active in school membership on the last day of school.
Dropout Rate (This measure only applies to schools with a twelfth grade.)
College, Career and Civic Readiness Index (CCCRI) (This measure only applies to schools with a twelfth grade.)
Cognia is a global accreditation organization made up of educators with the goal of helping schools improve. Accreditation from Cognia is a valuable mark of distinction recognized around the world. Each year, Cognia identifies schools and systems that best exemplify excellence in education and stand out in their service to learners, based on the results of its rigorous accreditation process. Cognia focuses on five standards:
Purpose and Direction
The extended learning program maintains and communicates a purpose and direction that commit to a sense of community and relationships among children, youth and adults; developmentally appropriate cognitive, emotional, social, creative and physical growth and development; as well as shared values and beliefs about teaching, learning, development and care for school-aged children and youth.
Governance and Leadership
The extended learning program operates under governance and leadership that promote and support learning, development and engagement in school-aged children and youth; family, school and community involvement; and program effectiveness.
Teaching and Assessing For Learning
The extended learning program’s curriculum, instructional design and assessment practices guide and ensure teacher and staff effectiveness and the developmentally appropriate cognitive, emotional, social, creative, and physical learning, development and engagement of school-aged children and youth.
Resources and Support Systems
The extended learning program has resources and provides services that support its purpose and direction to ensure success for all school-aged children and youth.
Using Results for Continuous Improvement
The extended learning program uses data about the developmentally appropriate learning, development and engagement of school-aged children and youth and overall program effectiveness to guide continuous improvement.
Cognia Accreditation Status and Index of Education Quality
Cognia reviews the results of the Accreditation Engagement Review to make a final determination concerning accreditation status for each institution based on these findings. Cognia provides the Index of Education Quality (IEQ) as a holistic measure of overall performance.
Woodgrove High School's IEQ = 331
An IEQ of above 300 indicates the institution meets Cognia's expectations for accreditation and that it includes one or more Areas for Improvement as well as one or more Noteworthy Practices. Institutions must address the Areas for Improvement and provide evidence of actions taken and results to Cognia in a required Progress Review due two years following the review.
