Principal's Message
Dear Broad Run High Families,
We are delighted to announce that Broad Run High School has been selected to participate in an exciting Loudoun County Public Schools initiative, Bring Your Own Technology (BYOT). Our staff and students have demonstrated strong skills with our existing resources, so are well prepared to begin this new opportunity.
Staff and students will utilize their own devices to engage in teaching and learning activities which will allow for more collaboration, critical thinking, and creativity, while increasing opportunities for communication. Our students have received instruction in Internet safety, digital citizenship, and media literacy as part of our effort to become a Common Sense Media Certified School. This recognition indicates that our school embraces the use of technology in a responsible, effective, and safe manner, to further teaching and learning. These lessons will continue as we embark upon this exciting journey.
Students and families who wish to participate will bring devices to school which will connect to the LCPS wireless network. Technical guidelines are available on the LCPS BYOT webpage. Any device will be helpful for students to use in classes; however, devices which are capable of creating content (laptops, tablets, Chromebooks) will be more useful to students than those which are more suited for consumption of content (cell phones). Devices with functional keyboards allow for the greatest flexibility, especially for tasks involving writing and the creation of digital content. If your child does not have access to a device that you are comfortable sending to school, a school-owned device will be provided to him/her to use in the classroom. At no time will a child be unable to participate in classroom activities because he/she does not own a personal device.
Students may begin to use their own devices at the discretion of their classroom teachers beginning after Spring Break. Each student will be responsible for his/her own device, which should be labeled with the student’s name. The use of a protective case is recommended. LCPS and/or BRHS will not be responsible for loss, damage, or theft of any personal electronic devices.
Broad Run High School is fully prepared to begin this journey, and we believe BYOT will have a positive impact on teaching and learning in our school. Please do not hesitate to contact us regarding our BYOT initiative by calling the school or using our online form (click here to submit comments/questions).
Sincerely,
Dave Spage
