Dual Enrollment

Participation in Dual Enrollment (DE) courses allows students to meet requirements for high school graduation while simultaneously earning college credits upon successful completion of the course. DE courses taught at the high school by a credentialed LCPS teacher enable students to earn these credits through agreements with partnering colleges or universities. DE course descriptions list the number of college credits that can be earned.

DE course offerings in LCPS high schools are determined by student interest, existing course offerings, and availability of teachers possessing the endorsements required to teach the course. Not all DE courses will be available at all LCPS high schools. Students should speak with their school counselor to determine which courses are available at their high school.

If a student enrolls in a DE course, they may be required to meet certain admission criteria set forth by the partnering college or university. Students will work directly with their high school to determine what those requirements may be and how to register for that course. DE courses through Northern Virginia Community College (NVCC) are available for students in 11th and 12th grades, and students must pass the Virginia Placement Test (VPT) administered by NVCC or by a substitute assessment, such as the PSAT or SAT. In addition, there may be certain prerequisites required for specific courses. Some DE classes may require a tuition payment.

New ID Verification Process

In an effort to prevent fraudulent applications, the Virginia Community College System (VCCS) has implemented an ID verification process, and applicants will need access to a computer or mobile device that has a camera in order to provide a real-time photo (Liveness Check) and upload a photo ID (Driver's License, Passport, ID Card, etc.).

Dual enrollment students will be exempt from this process if they complete their applications using the high school campuses’ WIFI networks where we have whitelisted the IP addresses. NVCC understands whitelisting is not foolproof and not all students will complete their NOVA applications in the high school buildings, DE students may inadvertently be prompted to complete the ID verification step. If this occurs, please email IDVerify@nvcc.edu and include your name, DOB, and high school, so the college can override the ID verification step on the backend.

Accommodation for Dual Enrollment Courses

Northern Virginia Community College

For students who need to seek accommodations related to their current plans (i.e. 504, IEP) for Dual Enrollment courses offered through Northern Virginia Community College (NVCC), NVCC Accommodations and Accessibility Services Office serves as the approver of accommodations.

Students and parents are directed to follow the NVCC approval process located here

Upon completion of an Accommodations Application, students are notified through the student’s VCCS (Virginia Community College System) Google mail account regarding their application.

Once accommodations have been approved through the NVCC Office of Accommodations and Accessibility, LCPS Dual Enrollment instructors will then honor approved accommodations.

The NVCC and LCPS Contract states that “the School (LCPS) shall work cooperatively with the College (NVCC) to implement accommodations or services in a manner which does not fundamentally alter the nature of the dual enrollment course in which the student is enrolled.”

For further NVCC policy or questions regarding college level coursework and the IDEA Improvement Act of 2004, please consult the NVCC at Email Accommodations
