In The Community

Femme Flow  - We started this organization because many homeless women don’t have access to feminine hygiene products, and therefore they cannot properly care for themselves. Because talking about the menstrual cycle is clouded with such a stigma, people are uncomfortable donating feminine hygiene products to homeless shelters, or even forget about it completely! This is why it is crucial to raise awareness for this issue. Our Clean Kits include pads, tampons, plastic bags, soap, as well as hand cloths. As of now, we have created over 2500 kits in the past four years!

Women Giving Back (WGB) - we are a store filled with donated clothing, accessories, shoes and more, for both women and children. Our clients are qualified by their case managers and are most typically living in shelters or part of a transitional program in and around the greater Washington, DC area.  Our volunteers provide personal service and uplifting interaction in a unique boutique-like atmosphere. We can provide compassion and companionship in otherwise tough situations.  Many clients leave their crises with only the clothing on their backs. We are here to help them restock those basic necessities free of charge. Through generous donations, we make sure these women and children have what they need to rebuild their lives and restore their dignity.

We are happy to sign up individuals for volunteer hours (we track all through volunteerhub and verifications may be emailed to me). We offer an orientation to introduce our organization and volunteer opportunities several times a month. Our volunteers come for two to three ½ hour shifts and do everything from sorting and hanging donations of clothing to preparing our store for shoppers to boxing up off-season items.  If your members are interested in volunteering, please direct them our website for sign-up information and FAQs. We are located off of Sterling Boulevard, close to Route 28 and Dulles airport.

Scientific Minds of America (SMOA) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization founded in 2015 by high-school and middle-school students to address the problem of educational inequity by connecting committed high-school scholars with elementary and middle school students through online tutoring. Over the past year, our 190+ tutors have helped over 230 students in a wide range of academic subjects, including English, social studies, science, and math.

SMOA is seeking volunteer tutors in grades 8 and above who would be willing to commit at least 1-2 hours per week to tutoring. As a tutor, you will be able to choose the subjects you teach, set your own schedule, and select your own grade-range! In addition, SMOA is a certified provider of the President’s Volunteer Service Award, which is a national distinction you can earn for time invested in volunteering with SMOA.
