At the 5th Annual Student Environmental Action Showcase, held at the Academies of Loudoun on April 24, 67 Loudoun County students presented projects that addressed real-world environmental issues. The goal of the event, which was coordinated by the Loudoun Environmental Education Alliance, was to showcase how students have meaningfully contributed to environmental stewardship in Loudoun County.  

Student exhibits were judged by a panel of judges who selected the following winners who were awarded cash prizes:

Grades K-5

  • 1st place ($500): “Crayon Stars” presented to Dhairya Jindal of Cardinal Ridge Elementary School.

  • 2nd place ($350): “How to Recycle at Your School” presented to Jennifer Pitzen’s 5th-grade class at Cardinal Ridge Elementary School.

  • 3rd place ($150): “Remote Control Trash-Eating Boat” presented to homeschooler Aleksandr Struts.

Grades 6-8

  • 1st place ($500): “Table to Garden Composting” presented to Seneca Ridge Middle School’s Garden Club, Kelly Anderson, Seneca Ridge Middle science teacher and Garden Club adviser.

  • 2nd place ($350): “EcoSlice: A Pizza Box Recycling Initiative” presented to Pranamya Jindal of Mercer Middle School.

  • 3rd place ($150): “Plastics in the Ocean” presented to Gabriel Vlachopoulos of Smart’s Mill Middle School.

Grades 9-12

  • 1st place ($500): “Investigating the Use of Pyrolyzed Sewage Sludge and Mushrooms as an Effective Additive to Develop Feasible Sustainable Concretes” presented to Akhilesh Tammana and Leila Ware of the Academies of Loudoun.

  • 2nd place ($350): “OzonePlus” presented to Arjun Rajesh of OzonePlus, a non-profit organization.  (also from Broad Run High School)

  • 3rd place ($150): Tie between “Superworm Composting,” presented to Olivia Cohn of Tuscarora HS, and “MicroMission,” presented to Katarina Walordy, Maadhavan Iyer, and Mireille Strittmatter of the Academies of Loudoun.

Innovation in Action Award (Grades K-12)

  • “The Weight of Our Advance” presented to Madeline Binkley of Independence High School. (This project was awarded $300.)

Loudoun SEAS was co-hosted by The Academies of Loudoun, Loudoun County Public Schools, the Loudoun Environmental Education Alliance, and the Northwest Virginia Regional GREENetwork. Donations from CMTA, Inc., Keep Loudoun Beautiful, and the Lucketts Ruritan Club sponsored the event.
