Delay or Early Dismissal Procedures

Delay/Early Closing or Emergency Closing Procedures

In the event that weather or other causes necessitate either closing or delaying the opening of school before buses start their routes, announcements will be made over the following radio/TV stations early in the morning (no later than 6:30 a.m.). The most reliable way to check on school closures is on the LCPS web (remember to refresh or reload the web page for continuing updates.) Please be considerate and do not tie up the school's phones by calling the school office. Also, please keep in mind that developing weather conditions during a "delayed opening day" may require an early closing of our schools. This will be announced as usual.

Local Radio And Tv Stations Will Carry These Announcements.

Radio Stations: WAGE 1200 AM, WMZQ 98.7 FM, WMAL 630 AM, WASH 97.1 FM, WXVA 98.3 FM, WMJR 107.7 FM, WJCW 105.9 FM,  WTOP 103.5 FM

Television Stations: WRC - TV4, FOX - TV5, WJLA - TV7, News Channel 8, WUSA - TV9

Delayed Opening

In the event of a delayed opening, please stay tuned to the radio/TV stations and LCPS web page in case some change in the weather causes school to be closed for the day.

A one-hour delay would mean that all programs would operate as usual except that they would start one hour later. (School begins at 8:50 a.m. and bus students dismissed at 2:35 p.m., and walkers dismissed at 2:40 p.m.)

  • Morning kindergarten starts at 8:50 a.m. and dismisses at 10:50 a.m.

  • Afternoon kindergarten starts at 11:35 and bus students dismissed at 2:35 p.m., and walkers dismissed at 2:40 p.m.

A two-hour delay would mean that school opening would be delayed for two hours with specific alternatives to certain programs. (School begins at 9:50 a.m. and bus students dismissed at 2:35 p.m., and walkers dismissed at 2:40 p.m.)

  • Morning kindergarten starts at 9:50 a.m. and students would remain for 2 hours and be dismissed at 11:50 p.m.

  • Afternoon kindergarten starts at 12:35 pm and students would remain for 2 hours. Bus students dismissed at 2:35 pm. and walkers at 2:40 p.m.

  •

Futura will begin 2 hours late and will end at the normal time.

Early Closing

When we have an early closing, announcements will be broadcast over the same radio/TV stations listed previously. Again, if you have internet access the most reliable source is to check the LCPS_web page (remember to hit refresh or reload.) When we have an early closing, it will probably be announced that school will close either one or two hours earlier than usual.

One-hour Early Closing:

  • All bus routes operate as usual except for starting one hour earlier than the normal time.

  • All after school programs are cancelled, including CASA.

 Two-hour Early Closing:

All bus routes operate two hours early with the following exceptions:

  • Morning kindergarten will go home at their regular time.

  • Afternoon kindergarten is cancelled.

  • All after school programs are cancelled, including CASA.

Parents: You must have at least two back-up plans for your child if school is closed early. One of the options cannot be for your child to remain at school until you arrive or to phone home/work for instructions. All students will be dismissed. Plan now with your neighbors what your child will do in this type of emergency. It will be too late once we have the first early closing!

How you can help during an emergency school closing:

  • Make arrangements now for your child if you work or should not be home.

  • Be sure your child knows of these arrangements.

  • If your child walks, tell him whether or not you will pick him up (no phone calls to work or home). Please do not take a child without notifying the office if your plans change.

  •

Do not call the school. The telephone lines should be kept clear for emergency instructions. . Be sure you have returned the EMERGENCY PLAN sheet to your child's teacher.

  • Sign up for Schools-Out to receive emails informing you of school cancellations!
