About Blue Ridge

Our Philosophy Of Education

We believe…

  • in creating a supportive and stimulating learning environment for adolescent students as they make a successful transition from elementary to intermediate to high school.

  • in providing a curriculum for differing ability levels, interests and learning styles, in order to encourage each child to realize his or her academic potential.

  • in encouraging parent and community involvement at Blue Ridge Middle School.

Our Mission...

  • Our dream is for our students to become well-rounded individuals, able to use their academic, emotional, and physical strengths to become productive members of society.

A Brief History of Blue Ridge Middle School

We opened on former farm land to the south side of Purcellville in 1971.  This new middle school, serving grades six through eight, was the feeder school to the Western Loudoun high school, Loudoun Valley High School.

The opening administrators were Mr. Ralph Kilmer, Principal, and Mr. J. L. Mauck and Mrs. Valerie Trujillo as assistant principals.  The original staff had forty-five members.

As the end of the 20th century saw an increase in the need for more classrooms in Western Loudoun, several expansions and a major renovation 2005 aligned the architectural design of the front of the building with the new middle schools being built in other areas of Loudoun County.  Blue Ridge currently can house over 1,000 students.  The staff has increased to over 120 teachers and paraprofessionals.

The school has had only five principals.  They have been Mr. Ralph Kilmer, Mrs. Teesdale-Smith, Mr. J. L. Mauck, Ms. Roberta Griffith and Mr. Brion Bell who took the reins in 2011.  Please take a virtual tour of Blue Ridge Middle School.  This video was created with photos taken by staff members and voice recordings by our students.

FAQs

WHAT IF...

  • IF…your child is absent, access ParentVue and report it there.

  • IF…you take your child to the doctor or dentist, please send in a physician's excuse.

  • IF…you want to bring your child to school early, please do not drop the student off before 8:00.  Doors open at 8:00 a.m.

  • IF…your child wishes to eat breakfast, it is available between 8:25 and 8:45. Students must report to the designated holding area first and leave book bags and/or other materials there.

  • IF…your child is tardy to school, upon arrival to school report to the main office to sign in, and then proceed to the house area, checking in with the house secretary for a pass to class.  Please send a note (preferably a doctor’s note) to explain the reason for the delay.  Excessive tardies, other than doctor visits, may result in disciplinary consequences.

  • IF…your child needs to leave early, please send an early dismissal report through ParentVue.  The house secretary will provide a pass to release the child at the appropriate time.  You must sign your child out in the main office.

  • IF…you have an emergency and must pick up your child early, call school as early as possible, especially before 2:00 p.m.  After that time, we must interrupt the entire class to notify your child, and we would prefer not to do that.

  • IF…your child wants to ride a different bus home with a friend, please send a note with your child indicating the bus number your child will be riding.  The house secretary will write a bus pass to ride the friend’s bus.

  • IF…you are picking up your child at the end of the day, send a note to the school making sure to indicate whether you are going to pick up your student in the main office or via the car rider line on the side of the building.

PLEASE, PLEASE…unless it is an emergency, do not call the office with messages after 3:00.  This is the busiest time of the day.  Staff may not have sufficient time to get the message to your child.
