Music

Welcome to Music!

Music instruction at Guilford Elementary is provided for all students in grades K through 5. All Students attend a 50-minute class once per week. Music class activities encompass four general areas: singing, listening, moving and playing classroom instruments. Instructional content includes the musical elements of rhythm, melody, harmony, form, tone color, and expression. Lessons on orchestral instruments, music history and multicultural music are also included in the curriculum, as well as opportunities for creativity.

The music room is equipped with a variety of instruments: acoustic and electronic keyboards (primarily for teacher use); numerous traditional and multicultural unpitched percussion instruments; pitched percussion instruments such as xylophones, metallophones, glockenspiels, tone chimes and bell sets; classroom string instruments such as autoharps and baritone ukuleles. Students will use our online music curriculum, Quaver, as well as the texts  SHARE THE MUSIC, published by Macmillan/McGraw Hill and MAKING MUSIC by Silver Burdett.

Mr. Hedlund

Mr. Hedlund

Hello! I am Mr. Hedlund, and I grew up in Culpeper, Virginia. I enjoyed school and joined band in elementary school and chorus in high school. I went on to college and received my bachelor's degree in Music Education from George Mason University in 2020. I have worked with students of all ages and love to see their passion for music. I am excited to return for my fourth year at Guilford this fall. I can't wait to see everyone and we will have a blast in music together!

Ms. Walsh

Ms. Walsh

Hello! I am Miss Walsh! I am a New Jersey native but had the pleasure of attending George Mason University School of Music and fell in love with Virginia.  I play many different instruments, but the euphonium is my speciality! As a recent Mason graduate, this is my second year teaching and I am so excited to learn right along side my students. As an itinerant music teacher, I am at Guilford Elementary on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays and at Sterling Elementary on Tuesdays and Thursdays! Go Gators!!
