Welcome to the

English Learners Program at Leesburg Elementary School!

Welcome to the Leesburg Elementary EL Program! Our ELs (English Learners) represent a variety of cultures and a wide range of educational and language experiences. To meet the needs of these English Learners, the EL instructional program in Loudoun County Public Schools is a multi-faceted, structured English language immersion program. It is designed to promote English language acquisition for non-native English speakers, with the goal of ensuring academic and social success now and in the future.

At Leesburg Elementary, our EL program offers co-teaching EL instruction within the general education classroom that focuses specifically on increasing reading, writing, listening, and speaking proficiencies. The EL team at Leesburg Elementary is comprised of linguistically and culturally diverse, professional staff. We are committed to serving our students through customized instruction that supports the Virginia Standards of Learning, while helping our students increase their social and academic English proficiency.

Julie Bruno ~ EL Teacher

Mrs. Bruno joined Leesburg Elementary in 2023, and is thrilled to be working with multilingual students!  She graduated from James Madison University and received her Master’s Degree in Education from George Mason University.  She previously taught kindergarten and 5th grade, and after taking time off to be at home with her children, she returned to LCPS as a substitute and PALS tutor.

Mrs. Bruno lives in Leesburg with her husband and their three children, Andrew, Will, and Samantha.  She loves spending time with her family, being outside, traveling to national parks, and walking her dog, Zoey.  If you see her around Leesburg, come say hi!  Please feel free to contact Email Mrs. Bruno

Melissa Heenan ~  EL Teacher

Mrs. Heenan is an English Learner (EL) teacher at Leesburg Elementary School.  This is her eighth year as an EL teacher, but her twelfth year at Leesburg Elementary School.  Previously, she taught third grade for two years, and prior to that she was the FLES (Foreign Language in the Elementary School) teacher at a variety of LCPS schools, including Leesburg Elementary.  At the beginning of her career, she taught fourth grade for six years.

Originally, she is from New Jersey, and received her B.A. in Spanish from Muhlenberg College.  She received a Master's Degree in Education with an English as a Second Language Endorsement from George Mason University.
At home, she lives with her two daughters, Emily and Maggie, her son, Finn and her husband, Kevin.  They have a crazy farm dog named Daphne.  Some of her favorite things to do in her free time are cooking, baking, running, and watching football.   She loves to run and exercise, and in the spring and summer she loves taking care of her flowerbed and garden!  Most of all, she loves spending time with her three children!

Mrs. Heenan believes that all students are unique and learn differently.  She also believes in preparing students for the real world by developing each child's critical thinking and social skills.

Her objectives for this school year include:

~  To create a working partnership between teachers and parents.

~  To challenge and inspire students in their learning.

~  To equip students with the knowledge and a love for learning that are critical for success in a global society.

~  To offer students the opportunity to experience success in school and life.

Your child's success is her main goal.  With your help and cooperation, this year will be full of wonderful and positive experiences.  The partnership between school and home will greatly benefit your child.  Mrs. Heenan looks forward to another exciting and productive year.
