The Virginia Board of Education has added a graduation requirement for high school students to successfully complete a 1-credit course in Economics and Personal Finance. At Rock Ridge, students fulfill this requirement in 11th grade.
Rock Ridge offers a 1/2 credit (semester) course in Personal Finance through the CTE Department and a 1/2 credit (semester) course in Economics through the Social Studies department. Students must complete both courses before their expected graduation date.
Personal Finance
Grades: 11 - 12 Credit: 1/2
Students learn how to navigate the financial decisions they must face and to make informed decisions related to career exploration, budgeting, banking, credit, insurance, spending, taxes, saving, investing, buying/leasing a vehicle, living independently, and inheritance. Development of financial literacy skills and an understanding of economic principles provide the basis for responsible citizenship and career success. In addition to developing personal finance skills, students also study basic occupational skills and concepts in preparation for entry-level employment in the field of finance.
All students will test for the W!SE Financial Literacy certification, which fulfills the graduation requirement for a CTE credential. Click here for an overview of the WISE certification.
