Seal of Biliteracy

You might be wondering about the difference between Credit Through Testing and the Seal of Biliteracy, this flowchart will help answer your questions.

Seal of Biliteracy

The Seal of Biliteracy is an award for graduating seniors (regardless of diploma type) that acknowledges proficiency in one or more languages in addition to English. Beyond the intellectual, personal, and social benefits of pursuing a multilingual education, the Seal provides individuals with a state-recognized credential that will allow them to stand out in the eyes of universities and employers. The State’s Seal is placed on the students’ diploma upon graduation. The World Languages and Cultures Department at Rock Ridge is incredibly proud of the graduates who have received this honor since 2016.

The Seal of Biliteracy testing will take place on February 18, 2025 and February 19, 2025.

Student application process (available for Juniors and Seniors only):

  • If you haven't taken the Seal of Biliteracy test yet, you will need to fill out the Seal of Biliteracy Application form before January 18th, 2025. You will then be contacted about payment information, testing time, and location. Upon passing the assessment, Seniors will need to complete the LCPS Seal of Biliteracy certificate and cord request before April 18th, 2025. Juniors will fill out the application the following year.

  • If you’re a senior who has already qualified for the Seal of Biliteracy by meeting one of the Virginia Department of Education’s accepted measures for proficiency, you will need to fill out the LCPS Seal of Biliteracy certificate and cord request before April 18th, 2025. You will then receive your certificate and your cord at graduation.
