Marketing Education

All Marketing Education students are eligible for membership in DECA, an association of Marketing students that prepares emerging leaders and entrepreneurs in marketing, finance, hospitality, and management in high schools and colleges around the globe. DECA is organized on local, state, and national levels to provide incentives and recognition through activities, competitions, and even scholarship opportunities.  DECA is co-curricular and is an integral part of each Marketing Education course.

First Year Students

Introduction to Business & Marketing
Grades:  9 - 11     Credit:  1

This entry-level course is offered for all students as an introduction to the business & information technology and marketing education program areas.  The 36-week (full year) course provides an overview of business and marketing concepts including economics, entrepreneurship, management & leadership, marketing activities, consumer choices, decision-making, contracts, banking, credit, career exploration, and employability skills. Communication and interpersonal skills are developed through various activities. "Intro" students are eligible for membership in both DECA and FBLA.

Second Year

Sports & Entertainment Marketing
Grades:  10 - 12     Prerequisite:  Introduction to Business & Marketing     Credit:  1 

Sports & Entertainment Marketing is a course designed for students with an interest in the sports and entertainment industries. This unique and innovative program explores the following areas: an orientation and understanding of the sports and entertainment industry; strategic planning; product licensing; dealing with agents and personal managers; examination of concessions and on-site merchandising; market analysis; investigating safety and security procedures; event marketing and execution; and the production of a culminating event and the analysis of the event. DECA is an integral part of this course.

Third Year

Marketing Co-Op

Grades:  11 - 12   Prerequisite: Intro + conference with instructor     Credits:  2

 

Marketing Non-Co-Op
Grades:  10 - 12   Prerequisite: Intro     Credits:  1 

Providing instruction that enables students to hold and succeed in an entry-level job in marketing, the course combines classroom instruction with supervised on-the-job training in a local marketing business. In this year of the program, students concentrate on developing competencies needed by marketing workers in the areas of human relations, communications, advertising, display, operations, sales, and product and service technology. The student is provided with a variety of learning methods including practical activities, simulations, computer activities, guest speakers, and role-playing. All students participate in employee activities with the school store, which is the marketing learning laboratory and school-based enterprise. All students will complete the National Retail Federation (NRF) Customer Service & Sales industry certification exam. Co-op students stay employed throughout the school year in a teacher-approved, marketing-related job. DECA is an integral part of this course.

Capstone Courses

Advanced Marketing Co-Op
Grades:  12            Prerequisite:  Marketing Co-op or Non Co-op     Credits:  2 

Advanced Marketing Non-Co-Op
Grades:  11 - 12     Prerequisite:  Marketing Co-op or Non Co-op     Credits:  1

Offering training in pre-management level skills and designed for the student who has a firm career interest in marketing, this course allows students to continue the arrangement of combining classroom instruction with supervised on-the-job training in a local marketing business. Instruction in this year of the program concentrates primarily on the development of competencies in the areas of sales promotion, merchandising, marketing research, and management. Students practice and reinforce skills by managing sales and business operations in the school store, the on-site learning laboratory for the marketing education program. All students will complete the NRF Advanced Customer Services & Sales industry certification exam. Co-op students are expected to stay employed throughout the school year in a teacher-approved marketing-related job. DECA is an integral part of this course.
